Anna Gielewska, editor-in-chief of the Central European investigative portal “Vsquare” and deputy editor of the portal “Frontstory” – in response to the information about granting asylum to Marcin Romanowski – claims that theoretically, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, is capable of anything. Without a doubt, the Hungarian Prime Minister decided to enter into an open conflict with the Polish government, she added.

On Thursday evening, Gergely Gulyas, head of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's office, confirmed that former Polish Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski had received Hungary political asylum. In a conversation with journalists, he argued that, according to Budapest, there is a crisis of the rule of law in Poland.

– The case is political in nature and should be read together with today's interview that Orban gave to the “Mandiner” portal – said Anna Gielewska, editor-in-chief of the Central European investigative portal “Vsquare” and deputy editor of the “Frontstory” portal.

She noted that during this conversation, the Hungarian Prime Minister “decided for an open confrontation with the Polish authorities, calling them the 'rainbow coalition'.” – This undoubtedly threatens to cause a serious political crisis, especially in the context of the upcoming transfer of the presidency of the EU Council to Poland – reminded Gielewska.

– Theoretically, Orban is capable of anything, which he has proven by openly supporting Russiablocking EU sanctions or providing shelter to people wanted by the services of other countries, as was the case with Daniel Obajtek, she said.

– We have described this type of activities many times in “Frontstory” and “Vsquare” and we were also the first to reveal that this may happen in the case of Marcin Romanowski – noted Gielewska.

Gielewska: it is important how the EU institutions will react

In her opinion, both Polish and Hungarian lawyers must now analyze the situation. However, the journalist pointed out that Orban's decision has no precedent in history that could be cited. – It will also be important whether and how EU institutions will react to the entire event – she added.

She suggested that Orban's bold decision may be related to his victory Donald Trump in the presidential elections in USA. – Citing his close relations with the president-elect, Orban believes that after the new year he will be the main player in Europe – said Gielewska, noting that it is too early to assess how likely such a scenario is.

The National Prosecutor's Office accuses Romanowski, who as a politician of Solidarity Poland (and then Sovereign Poland) was the deputy head of the Ministry of Justice supervising the Justice Fund in the years 2019-2023, of committing 11 crimes, including participation in an organized criminal group and fixing competitions for money from this fund.
