Everything indicates that there cannot be a fair trial here, in these political conditions, said Jarosław Kaczyński when asked on Friday by TVN24 journalist Radomir Wit about the case of former deputy minister of justice Marcin Romanowski. On Thursday, the Hungarian government granted Romanowski political asylum, but according to Kaczyński, the PiS MP “is not a fugitive from justice.”

The Hungarian government granted political asylum on Thursday PiS MP Marcin Romanowski, a suspect in the investigation regarding the Justice Fund. Earlier, the District Court in Warsaw announced the issuance of a European Arrest Warrant against the politician.

Kaczyński, asked on Friday by TVN24 Radomiar Wit journalist whether it was not a cause for shame that the former deputy minister of justice in the PiS government was a fugitive from justice, replied that “he is not a fugitive from justice.”

– He wants to avoid not justice, but the actions of people who are in places where they shouldn't be. They simply have no right to do this, it is all illegal, Kaczyński said.

No chance for a fair trial in “these political conditions”

The PiS leader commented on the attitude of Romanowski, who is in Hungary: – What he refers to, i.e. these changes in court presidents, changes in adjudicating panels, other measures, all this indicates that a fair trial here, in these political conditions, can't. There are every grounds to avoid it.

The National Prosecutor's Office accuses Romanowski, who as a politician of Solidarity Poland (and then Sovereign Poland) was the deputy head of the Ministry of Justice supervising the Justice Fund in 2019-2023, of committing 11 crimes, including: participation in an organized criminal group and arranging competitions for money from this fund. These crimes were to include, among others: “by indicating to subordinate employees entities that should win competitions for subsidies from the Justice Fund.”
