Dangerous situation in Sejny (Podlaskie Voivodeship). Two young men were taken to hospital with injuries to their hands and faces after a firecracker exploded. The police appeal for caution when lighting fireworks.
The incident took place on Monday evening in Sejny. According to the police, the firecracker injured two people: a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old.
Men with hand and face injuries
– The explosion was so strong that one of the men suffered injuries to both hands and the other suffered facial injuries – said Tomasz Krupa, spokesman for the Podlasie police, on Tuesday. Both were taken to the Sejny hospital. They told the police that after lighting the firecracker, they set it on the ground, but it fell over and did not explode. – The explosion occurred only when they approached it again – said Krupa. The men were also under the influence of alcohol; one had over half a per mille, the other – close to per mille.
Police appeal
Officers appeal for caution when using firecrackers. According to regulations, fireworks can be used on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. In Podlasie – where there are the largest concentrations of Orthodox Christians who celebrate New Year's Eve according to the Julian calendar (January 13) – in accordance with the regulation of the Podlasie Voivode, pyrotechnic products can be legally used in the voivodeship.
