According to the local police, a 23-year-old man attacked pedestrians on Saturday before 16 in Villach, lying in Carinthia in the south of Austria.
The incident occurred in the city center around the market square. The attacker attacked passers -by, and then he was detained after one of the witnesses of the incident followed him in a chase by car.
As a result of the attack, a 14-year-old boy died and four people were injured. The oldest of the victims is 32 years old.
“Crime motives are unknown”
According to police spokesman Rainer Dionisio, “the motives of the crime are unknown”. It is known that a man is a Syria citizen with a residence permit in Austria.
In connection with the event, the police strengthened patrols throughout Carinthia. The officers assume that the perpetrator acted alone, although they do not rule out other scenarios. According to ORF, police officers were also to search in a refugee center where the Syrian stayed.
