The start of the Axiom-4 mission is planned for Tuesday. Among the astronauts who will fly to the international space station, he will be Dr. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski. As the scientific journalist and science popularizer Tomasz Rożek told on TVN24, the mission with the participation of a Pole has not only scientific and technological goals.

On Saturday morning from the Space Flight Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida Spacex Falcon 9 rocket has started. If everything goes according to plan, the Axiom-4 crew mission, flying to the International Space Station, will start from the same complex. The Polish astronaut dr Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will be on board the Crew Dragon capsule.

Safer than you can think

In the program “Get up and weekend” scientific publicist Tomasz Rożek from the “Nauk. This I like” foundation explained that we live in a time when rocket starts are no longer extraordinary events. In 2023 alone, almost a hundred mission took off from Cape Canaveral. According to the expert, flights can be more frequent, among others thanks to the technology of recovering some rocket elements and their reusable. The repeatability of the whole process also affects its safety.

– flight in cosmos This is a situation in which a group of daredevils is closed in a fairly tight space and placed on the top of a huge pipe filled with explosives – he said. – Sure, it's more risky than a flight. However, because of this (…) that these flights are so frequent, we have refined some procedures and standards. Although it sounds abstract, it is not so dangerous – he assured.

The expert explained that the Crew Dragon capsule is autonomous, so during the flight the role of astronauts is mainly monitoring of systems. However, the crew is prepared for various emergency situations. Some processes are then manually controlled, and each astronaut has its own role and scope of duties.

New discovery of the world

Rożek said that today's space exploration is a continuation of great geographical discoveries, in many respects safer than Columbus, Vasco Da Gama and other explorers.

– We have other standards, we have respect for human life, we have a much greater recognition of the area – he explained. – Mars is not Terra Incognita, (…) Its surface is better armed than the bottom of our earthly oceans – he added.

Talking about Dr. Uznański-Wiśniewski's flight on the ISS, the cone emphasized that one of the key goals of the mission is also to inspire young people. For the development of space technologies, not only specialists in mathematics and physics are needed, but also many other fields of science, and their lack may hinder the development of this branch of the economy.

– We reject a quite large group of those young people who, for some reason (…) do not like this mathematics, do not understand her. Today, space is also biology, it is also medicine, human science, cosmic law, ethics and moral issues – he explained.
