What if you look at the Brave into the wardrobe, desk and pocket? Or rather, to the chest, under the bench and to Kalety, because with furniture in the early Middle Ages it was fragile, and the pocket was not known. On the thousandth anniversary of the coronation of the first Polish king, we look at him through the prism of objects he surrounded and used.

This year, Bolesław Chrobry has already hit the murals, smartphones and cups and socks. Who does not want to limit themselves to pop -culture gadgets, this can take advantage of many offers that museos are preparing all over Poland. In the Poznań Archaeological Museum, just before Easter, the exhibition “Bolesław the Brave from Poznań to power and crown” was opened. Against the background of quite obvious and effective monuments from the era – such as military, coins and jewelry – it is easy to overlook a small, gray ball hidden under the glass of display cases.
– It is a cocoon of an insect, which in the 1960s was considered a mulberry silkworm cocoon – says the co -creator of the exhibition Mateusz Sikora. – He was discovered during research at the Cathedral Square of Ostrów Tumski in Poznań in a layer dated to the first half of the 11th century. The find was interpreted as evidence of breeding these insects in early medieval Poland and the production of precious silk – explains the archaeologist. But he almost immediately adds that the fantasy at that time was suffered: – The first doubts had experts from the Institute of Natural Fibers, who knew perfectly well that even today's silkworm farming is very difficult in our climate. When entomologists leaned over again over the cocoon, they came to the conclusion that it was some oak -winged insect – explains Sikora.

After all, the cocoon went to the display case, because it is a great excuse to a story about what Bolesław Chrobry could dress. And that he wore silk robes, it's almost certain. How do we know this? By analogy. That's how the rulers just dressed, and the shreds of silk fabrics are found in elite burials from the 11th century.
