The First Day: Medinas and Markets
Everything in Marrakech revolves on the Medina, the city’s walled and most historic quarter. Spend a day taking in the sounds, scents, and sights of this fascinating region, visiting the souks and squares.
1. Take a stroll in the Medina
The Medina’s most charming feature is its network of small lanes that take you back in antiquity. Toss away your map and get lost in the pleasure of evading donkeys and carts.
Enjoy the colors of the walls and buildings, the aromas of the cuisine and spices, and engage in conversation with friendly residents. The sounds of the call to prayer reverberating down the small alleyways from the nearby mosques are the most distinctive. Go to one of the numerous rooftop cafés for panoramic sounds and views to enjoy this high up.
Jamaa El Fnaa
The world-famous Jamaa el Fnaa plaza is located in the center of the Medina. Going across this plaza is unlike any other! As you wiggle your way among snake charmers, performers, and street food vendors offering fresh juices, feel the heat hammering off the stone floor.
During night, the area comes to life with music, with flute musicians, dancers, and artists all performing in front of the stalls’ dazzling lights. This incredible display of Moroccan culture should not be missed!
3. Visit the Souks
If the square is the heart of Marrakech, the souks are its genuine spirit. Stroll just off the main plaza to see an incredible maze of markets. Don’t worry about it; instead, enjoy the brilliant colors of the fabrics, the enchanting scents of the colorful spice mountains, the high-quality leatherwork, and the sparkling lights reflecting off the lanterns and colored glassware. Visit the major souk, ‘Souk Semmarine,’ which is situated right off Jamaa el Fnaa. The original spice souk, ‘Souk Place des Epices,’ is a bit farther away.
4. Locate the Finest Restaurants and Bars
Marrakech boasts a wide range of traditional and fusion restaurants serving superb tagine and couscous. Café Atay was our particular favorite. There’s also Café Clock, which is more of a fusion restaurant but is also extremely wonderful!
All buildings in Moroccan architecture have flat roofs, making them ideal for rooftop bars. Visit the museum Maison de la Fotagraphie, which has the tallest rooftop bar in the medina for spectacular views, or go to a rooftop café overlooking Jemaa el Fnaa for a wonderful mint tea!
Day 2: Amazing Architecture
Day 2 may be spent bouncing between amazing buildings. Observe classic Moroccan architecture and designs such as arches and blue tiles, as well as more modern ideas such as artistic structures and museums.
5. Spend the Night in a Traditional Riad
The best way to observe the magnificent features of Moroccan architecture is to stay in a traditional riad (guesthouse). They are often a sandy tint with simple construction on the exterior.
