On Wednesday (December 25, 2024), it crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan plane passenger Embraer 190 of Azerbaijan Airlines with 67 passengers. 38 people died. According to the hypothesis of several Western experts, the plane could have been shot down by a Russian anti-aircraft missile. There are “preliminary indications” that “the plane was shot down by Russian air defense systems,” White House spokesman John Kirby explained, without providing further details.

“The President of Russia Vladimir Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for the fact that the tragic accident took place in Russian airspace,” the Kremlin said after the two leaders' telephone conversation. Putin also announced that Russian air defense against Ukrainian drone attacks was deployed at that time.
