Dangerous events in the Polish mountains. On Monday, two tourists fell from a height of about 400 meters in an avalanche in the Tatra Mountains while trying to climb Rysy. On the same day, goprists rescued a man who was partially buried by an avalanche in the Babia Góra area. Everyone was very lucky, none of the tourists suffered serious injuries.

According to the Tatra Volunteer Emergency Service, on Monday, just before dusk, two tourists reported to the rescuers in the shelter at Morskie Oko after falling about 400 meters in an avalanche. They tried to conquer Rysy.

“The tourists can talk about an incredible dose of happiness, because despite falling with an avalanche on the ground from which there are still a lot of rocks sticking out, they suffered minor superficial injuries,” we read. It was noted that the two tourists did not have an avalanche ABC, i.e. a detector, a probe and a shovel.

As reported by TOPR, “the main masses of snow stopped just below the narrowing in the Wielki Wołowe Żleb, creating a deposit exceeding three meters in depth. The avalanche was triggered by tourists at an altitude of 2,070 m above sea level in an area with an inclination exceeding 40 degrees.”

The announcement recalled that despite the small amount snow in the Tatra Mountains you must be vigilant and basic knowledge of the topography of the area is required. The second degree of avalanche danger applies. “Places of ice and rocks blown away are adjacent to deposits of wind-blown snow. Just falling with an avalanche may have serious consequences,” the mountaineers warned.

After being warmed up, the man was able to move on his own. Accompanied by rescuers, he descended to Markowe Szczawiny, from where he was transported to the Lipnicka Pass. Gopro workers reported that he drove home in his own car in good condition.

Tourist conditions in the Babia Góra area are difficult. The first, lowest level of avalanche danger applies. There is 25 centimeters of snow in Markowe Szczawiny, 40 cm in the peak parts of Babia Góra, and even 80 cm in some places with blowing snow. Small avalanches and slides occur.
