Zbigniew Boniek is one of the greatest Polish footballers in history. In the past, he played for clubs such as Juventus and AS Roma, and after his career he finds fulfillment as an activist. In the years 2012–2021 he was the president of the Polish Football Association.
Zbigniew Boniek attacked the prosecutor's office
A few years after the end of cooperation with PZPN, the prosecutor's office in Szczecin charged Zbigniew Boniek with acting to the detriment of the federation, for which he faces up to 10 years in prison. According to investigators, the former football player allegedly exposed the union to losses of over one million zlotys. This is a case from 2014when the union signed a contract with the Ustronianka company. At that time, the federation was to pay approximately PLN 1 million to Ottair, a wind energy company, as a commission for intermediation in the transaction. Zbigniew Boniek believes that this is political revenge. The deputy head of UEFA posted a strong entry on X (formerly Twitter) attacking Zbigniew Ziobro, the Minister of Justice in 2015-2023 in the governments of Beata Szydło and Mateusz Morawiecki.
“The behavior of Ziobro's prosecutor's office in Szczecin is pitiable. The charges are pure heresy and absurd. Moreover, they don't even want to question important witnesses. They are afraid for their house of cards. Total arrogance and pride. They do what they want and how they want, pathetic,” he wrote .
Zbigniew Boniek opens up about the allegations: This case is ridiculous
Zbigniew Boniek has been a suspect since September 2, and he talked more about the whole case in the program “Dwa Fotele” on the YouTube channel Meczyki.pl. – I was a prosecutor in Szczecin three months ago, but I couldn't comment on anything because they didn't give me any documents. Only later did they manage to reach them. And I went there recently to present my position, he said.
– PZPN and the sponsor operate on the basis of private law. So why is the prosecutor from Szczecin interested in this? This case is ridiculous and is not within the competence of these people. They have prepared a thesis and now you have to fight them, where it is difficult to convince them of anything. Let us also be clear: the justice system in Poland today is a total mess in every field. The previous government made such a plan that it is difficult to move anything at all today. And we see what the problems are every day, he continued.
– They hunted me, my brother, Maciek Sawicki and others… And how did it all end? Like. I want to laugh and cry. You could say that they charged me and – as they say – “I'm not clean anymore,” he concluded.
