We live in an increasingly dangerous world, so you have to be better prepared. It is not only about the threat from Russia, but also from cyber criminals and due to the rapid effects of climate change or possible pandemic. The European Union comes out of this assumption and promotes the slogan “ready for everything”. Brussels wants the Member States to develop plans that will allow them to last 72 hours. For example, it's about survival sets.

How to react, when there is a long time of electricity, there will be an earthquake, instant flooding or a terrorist attack? The European Commission wants every Union citizen to know the answers to these questions and be ready to survive for at least 72 hours.

The EC suggests that there is a set of survival in every home in the event of a sudden crisis. Importantly, it's all just in case. – We repair the roof while the sun is still shining. We want to minimize damage that it can cause if the roof has not been repaired – explains by the analogy of Roxan Minzat, vice -president of the European Commission.

EU action “Ready for everything”

The EU Commissioner for Readiness and Crisis Management in a recording maintained in a humorous tone suggests that the survival set includes, among others, a flashlight, matches or lighter, bottled water, food with a long useful date for consumption, PowerBank, identity documents in waterproof packaging.

– We have 10 scenarios on the table. Starting from floods, forest fires, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, tsunami, to attacks with chemical or nuclear weapons. We take into account all these scenarios, practice, exchange information – notes Hadja Lahbib, EU Commissioner for Crisis Management.

The action is carried out under the slogan “Ready for everything”. It is to be accompanied by her educational activities. There is even an idea to introduce the European Day of Ready. The European Commission must face whether in the context of the war in Ukraine such actions are not panic.

– Awareness of risk and preparing for them is the opposite of creating panic and irrational actions that we could see during the pandemic. We saw crowds of people buying toilet paper in stores. Was it really to protect them from Pandemia? No, being prepared is knowledge about what can happen and readiness for this – emphasizes the EU Commissioner for Ready of Crisis Management.

– This is scaring, and on the other hand, if you are not afraid, you will not convince people to do anything. And this is the today's paradox. Only instead of scaring you just need to build a few levels of safety, i.e. say that this and this is most often needed. For this you do not need any philosophy, it must simply be at home – indicates Prof. Daniel Boćkowski, a security expert at the University of Warsaw.

What country is other threats

Brussels wants to cooperate with the governments of the Member States that prepare their own crisis plans. The model is solutions already functioning in the Scandinavian countries, but every country is other threats. Our part of the continent is not threatened by strong earthquakes. Spaniards or Portuguese are less afraid of Russian aggression.

– Our citizens are in a very different way informed about the risk and dangers they can come across. There are various geopolitical realities. From Finland, which shares with Russia, borders over a thousand kilometers long, to Spaniards, Portugal and Greece, which are haunted by forest fires – notes Hadja Lahbib.

Extreme weather phenomena compounded by climate change are a special category of threats. As the most tragic example, Brussels indicates heavy rains and floods, which in October hit the Valencia region in Spain. A sudden disaster consumed the lives of over 200 people.
