December will begin on Sunday, and with it meteorological winter. This means that more types of this season are inevitably approaching. We will welcome the calendar and astronomical changes three weeks later.
There are more and more signs of winter in the weather, and soon the next season will also officially begin. This year we will welcome astronomical winter on December 21st at 10:19 am.
Astronomical winter begins at the winter solstice. This is the moment when the Sun rises at zenith over the Tropic of Capricorn, which is the southernmost possible latitude in the Southern Hemisphere. The day on which the winter solstice falls is the shortest day of the year.
A day later, calendar winter will come. It will be Sunday, December 22. These types of seasons have fixed dates.
Meteorological winter is the first
But before that, already on Sunday, December 1, the meteorological winter will begin and will last until February 28.
The concept of meteorological seasons was introduced for the needs of meteorologists and climatologists. It serves to always refer to the same period when comparing statistical or climatic data.
