Can twins be allergic to the same?

The twins combine a lot in common. Can two people who have the same genes have an allergy to the same things? The answer is not clear.

Regardless of whether it is spring sneezing because of pollen or breathing problems caused by specific food, allergies are caused by the combination of genes and the impact of the environment. The more things are common to two, the greater the probability that they will be allergic to the same things. The twins are more exposed to allergies because of what they have in common. However, there are some factors that make it not so obvious.

Scientists from Australia have already discovered several dozen years ago that 60-70 percent of the twins suffered from environmental allergies, and identical twins were more exposed to allergies than dual twins. The first ones share 100 percent of genes with each other, while the two -day twins – 50 percent, which is the same extent as every pair of siblings.

What about allergies at the twins?

Much more genetics analyzes were carried out in the case of food allergies. One study from 2000 on an allergy to peanuts showed that identical twins were more exposed to allergies to this food than dual twins.

The twins can be allergic to the same things and it is more likely to be. This is due to common genetics and joint growing up. “But the twins are not allergic to exactly the same things from the machine,” said Breanne Hayes Haney, who has an internship with allergology and immunology at the University of West Virginia, on the conversation.

As an example, she presented the hypothetical situation of two twins separated after birth, which grew up in different homes. One lived on a farm with pets, and the other – in the city center.

“What if the parents of one of them smoke and the other not? And what if one of them lives with numerous siblings and the other is an only child? They can develop various allergies, but it can also be that they will not appear such a disease” – the expert added supplementing that scientists continue researching this field of medicine to explore this topic in the future.
