From January 15, drivers driving part of the A2 motorway between Poznań and Konin will be able to use the electronic payment service via video tolling, Anna Ciamciak, spokeswoman for Autostrada Wielkopolska (AWSA), announced on Friday.

For now, the automatic toll system will be available at selected motorway toll gates in Nagradowice, Słupca and Lądek.

Videotolling on part A2

Videotolling is a toll collection system that uses cameras to automatically recognize vehicle license plates.

The area of video tolling implementation, limited to the part of A2 between Poznań and Konin, is due to, among others, due to differences in the toll systems applicable on two concession sections of the A2 motorway – Świecko – Nowy Tomyśl and Nowy Tomyśl – Konin.

– On the Świecko – Nowy Tomyśl section, a closed toll system applies, the proceeds of which are transferred to the state budget. However, the Nowy Tomyśl – Konin section is bound by a concession agreement based on a system of actual fees with full traffic and revenue risk on the part of the concessionaire. Due to the overlap of both settlement systems on the Nowy Tomyśl – Gołuski section, the introduction of the video tolling service is only possible at the toll collection points in Nagradowice, Lądek and Słupca, i.e. east of Poznań – said Rafał Popowski, traffic and toll collection manager at AWSA .

Talks with the ministry

The company is in talks with the Ministry of Infrastructure about the possibility of introducing video tolling on the 106 km between Świecko and Nowy Tomyśl. This will make it possible to cover all toll collection points on both concession sections of the A2 motorway with this system.

Paweł Struski from the AWSA management board emphasized that the implementation of video tolling will improve travel on the A2 motorway between Poznań and Konin.

– We are also ready to implement video tolling on the entire 255-kilometer section of the A2 between Świecko and Konin, in a formula convenient for all drivers, both trucks and passenger cars – he assured.

How to use video tolling

To use video tolling, you must register your vehicle in the Autopay system. At each toll plaza, drivers will have two lanes at their disposal, specially marked and dedicated exclusively to video tolling.

Anna Ciamciak explained that these will be the leftmost lanes with horizontal markings in the form of arrows and a camera, a camera icon on an orange background above the gate and a crossed-out cashier symbol. The cameras installed there will automatically read the vehicle's license plates. The system will debit the user's account with the appropriate amount for the trip.

The spokeswoman emphasized that the solution implemented by AWSA is compliant with the European standard.

Videotolling works, among others, on selected sections of Polish motorways, e.g. A1 and A4. It ensures safety and comfort of travel and, above all, traffic flow – it reduces waiting time and payment at the toll gates. It does not require additional equipment and allows payment also to owners of fuel cards accepted as a form of payment by the video tolling operator.

Regardless of the introduction of the new service, travel on the Poznań motorway bypass, i.e. between the Poznań Zachód and Poznań Wschód junctions, will remain free of charge.
