Visit XI on the 75th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations coincides with the announcement by the President USA Donald Trump of customs customs for goods from 57 countries, including Vietnam in the amount of 46 percent, which he then “suspended” and implemented the overall 10 % tariffs. China is currently covered by a 145 % tariff.
Vietnam exports to the USA ($ 137 billion in 2024) and investments of companies diversifying operations away from China are therefore threatened. The authorities in Hannoi did not respond to American tariffs of retaliation as opposed to China.
China introduces themselves as a stable partner
Beijing strives to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries, which last year were the largest recipient of Chinese exports ($ 586.5 billion). Vietnam imported goods worth $ 161.9 billion. In 2024, Vietnam exports to China amounted to just over $ 61 billion.
Visit XI is read as an attempt to present China as a stable partner, unlike the USA. Vietnam, like China, conducts a flexible policy called “bamboo diplomacy”, maintaining good relations with both China and the United States.
The tension in the relationships of Hanoi with Beijing cause considerable territorial in the South China Sea.
