“Coffee on the bench” after the US elections. Presidential advisor: there has been no conversation between Andrzej Duda and Donald Trump yet

Donald Trump won the US presidential election, defeating the Democratic candidate and current vice president Kamala Harris. On January 20, he will be sworn in and return to the White House.

Mieszko Pawlak (Chancellery of the President), Katarzyna Lubnauer (Nowoczesna, KO), Anna Bryłka (Confederation), Marcin Horała (PiS), Krzysztof Hetman (PSL) and Andrzej Szejna (Left) assessed in “Kawa na ława” what it may mean for Poland Donald Trump's presidency.

“Gazeta Wyborcza” reported three days after the election that the president Andrzej Duda will fly to the United States on Friday, where he will meet Donald Trump.

In “Kawa na ława” Mieszko Pawlak said that “no flights or visits were organized in the way it was described in 'Gazeta Wyborcza'”. He added that there has been no telephone conversation between Andrzej Duda and Donald Trump yet.

– Of course, it is possible that contact and conversation will take place in the near future. The chancellery officials actually took some steps to analyze what it would look like, what the length of the flights would be, it was a completely informal check for the future. However, what was described about an alleged departure on Friday evening is absolutely untrue and such a visit was not organized – said Mieszko Pawlak.

He assessed that “the role of the president as the longest-serving politician in Poland, head of the Polish state, but also a person who has very good personal relations with Trump, will be crucial.”

On the morning after the election, the results already showed Trump's clear advantage. During a session of the Polish Sejm PiS and Confederation MPs stood up and started clapping. Some of them chanted: “Donald Trump.”

Marcin Horała admitted that his “first instinct” was to get up. – You can do such a small courtesy to the head of an allied country, but I sat down quite quickly because I actually think it was a bit excessive – said the PiS politician.

– I think it was an understandable emotion, because (…) from the point of view of Poland's interests, Donald Trump is a better choice than… Kamala Harris. However, he is the president of a foreign country that has its own interests, so although they are largely consistent with ours, they are not one hundred percent and things may be different in the next four years, he added.

Vice President-elect J.D. Vance presented the tenets of Trump's closing plan in late September war in Ukraine. He spoke about the need to create a demilitarized zone on the demarcation line between Russia and Ukraine. According to Vance, this line “would have to be heavily fortified to prevent the Russians from invading again.” In turn, Moscow “would receive from Kiev a guarantee of the neutrality of Ukraine remaining outside NATO and such allied institutions.” He also suggested that “the conflict continues because American arms companies and financial institutions are making money on it.”

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrzej Szejna (Left Wing) said that only those solutions that are acceptable to Ukraine are acceptable to Poland. – We are a loyal ally, partner and advocate not only of Ukraine's membership in NATO, but of course also in the European Union, he said.

– In my personal opinion, the situation in which the territories currently occupied by Russia suddenly fall to Russia and Ukraine is unable to join NATO is inconsistent with Polish interests – added Szejna.

Krzysztof Hetman (PSL) believes that the administration Joe Biden “it gave more peace and confirmed all kinds of alliances.” – However, we all know that a million words have already been said about the unpredictability of President Donald Trump. It's hard to say which direction it will go. (…) From Poland's point of view, what is currently a leak or a plan announced by JD Vance, who is to be vice president, is absolutely unacceptable from the Polish point of view, not to mention the Ukrainian point of view, said the politician.

– Legalizing the withdrawal of part of Ukraine's territory from Russia is simply an extremely dangerous precedent for us. (…) If a large part of Ukraine is to be demilitarized, the question is who will guarantee the security of this Ukraine – said Hetman.

He added that “we really need to join forces to be very vigilant towards the new Donald Trump administration.”

Anna Bryłka from Konfederacja said that it should be remembered that the war in Ukraine “is not a priority of the United States administration.” – China comes first and this is the priority in US foreign policy. Later Middle EastUkraine. That's more or less how it goes, she said.

Asked whether this is the right time for peace negotiations when Russia occupies a significant part of Ukraine, Bryłka said: – The question that should be asked is whether, if this war lasts even longer, will these peace conditions be more favorable for Ukraine or NO.

Katarzyna Lubnauer (Nowoczesna, KO) was asked whether there was no sense of anxiety in the ruling camp after the “harsh words” towards Donald Trump from Donald Tusk Whether Radosław Sikorski. – In politics, a lot of harsh words are said, and then the caravan moves on. (…) Trump primarily has a transactional approach to most matters relating to international relations, Lubnauer believes.

– Security is important to us, but we cannot always count on America to be responsible for it. We also need to realize that we will know more when we actually see Trump's surroundings. Previously, after Trump's departure, all those people who were around Trump were very critical of his actions, including the vice president. Therefore, the question now is who will he surround himself with. And only when we get to know these people, get to know their views, find out what their views are on NATO and Ukraine, will we know more, she said.
