A few months ago, I announced the creation of drone troops. This is becoming a fact. From January 1, drone troops will function not as a plan, but as a real part of the Polish Army, said Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones are to be delivered to Poland by the first quarter of 2027.
The contract for the supply of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned system was concluded on Thursday between the Armament Agency and General Atomics. At the press conference Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz talked about investments for the Polish Army and Poland's strategic security.
He emphasized that “security and economy are in the first place in our activities.” – A few months ago I announced the creation of drone troops, it is becoming a fact. From January 1, drone troops will function not as a plan, but as a real part of the Polish Army, but before this happens, another contract for very important unmanned systems will be signed – said the minister.
– This is cutting-edge technology. It costs money, because we have to pay about one billion two hundred million zlotys for several machines of this type. $310 million. This is a serious expense, but it is the highest quality equipment, he explained.
“Sometimes incompetence is not someone's fault”
The minister explained that currently there is leasing for American drones, but from 2027 the machines will be owned by the Polish Army. He added that “drones will have an impact both on land, but also in the sea and water areas. Wherever necessary.”
– Over 100 contracts have been signed this year. In fact, we are opening an important week, a dozen or so days until the end of this year, in which we will be signing not one, but several contracts almost every day. Tomorrow we will also meet at the Okęcie airport to sign an important contract – announced the politician.
The minister also referred to the discussions that occurred regarding the purchase of military equipment. – Those who said that there would be no contracts and that purchases would not take place were simply misleading. They have neither knowledge nor preparation. (…) Sometimes incompetence is not someone's fault, it is simply a vice – he said.
Investing in relationships with allies
Kosiniak-Kamysz referred during the conference to economic relations with allies NATO. – This is what President Trump recently said, that countries must spend money on armaments, but they must also take actions to support their economies – he said.
In the politician's opinion, the key and at the same time one of the first elements of Poland's entry into the group of democratic countries after the political transformation in 1989 was the signing of a free trade agreement with the United States. – Today our government is proving that they are a strategic partner in the field of security United States for Poland, and building drone troops is an absolute priority for us. Today, it is impossible to conduct an effective deterrence and defense policy without investing in this type of troops, explained the minister.
