It is hard to imagine that we would choose a pope who will close back in the walls of the Vatican – Professor Hanna Suchocka said on TVN24. The former premiere indicated that the Holy See “is an important player in international policy.”
Two days before the start of the conclave, there was a premiere and the former ambassador in Vaticanprofessor at the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań Hanna Suchocka hosted the program “This is how it is” on TVN24. She talked, among others, about what diplomat the future pope should be.
– I think the Pope cannot stand on the side of the politics. However, the Holy See is a global subject of international law. I think there are high expectations when it comes to the Pope's voice in global matters – said Hanna Suchocka.
She pointed out that we are dealing with “new turmoil in international policy”. – It is hard to imagine that we would choose a pope who will close back in the walls of the Vatican. The church is a very important element of the global world – the former head of government emphasized.
“The Holy See is an important player in international policy”
Suchocka further recalled conversations with ambassadors of non -Catholic countries who justified why their countries keep the embassies at the Vatican. – One of such was, for example, the Ambassador of Great Britain and he said that we are why we have an embassy at the Holy See, because the Church plays a global role, and due to the universality of the Church, the Holy See is important – let's use this secular term – a player in international policy – she pointed out.
She also noted that, apart from treating the Holy See as an entity of international law, at the same time “we are talking about the Church as an institution rooted in transcendence”. – And it is the extremely difficult role of the pope to combine these features – she added.
She emphasized that “this connection is crucial for the modern world.” – For the church will always be in some sense collided with what the world proposes, but it must find (also) a solution – explained Suchocka.
Hanna Suchocka also mentioned that as an ambassador she observed the actions of John Paul II “in favor of peace, in favor of a common good, in favor of Solidarity.” – Then Pope Francis He also tried to find these challenges of the present day and sometimes opened some roads, but not (their) ended – she added.
– The new pope is in a difficult place at the moment, because he must make the choices in what direction he will go, how he will connect the challenges of the modern world with the role of the Church – summed up Suchocka.
