Warnings from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management apply to most of Poland. Snow is expected to fall heavily in some regions, and in many places roads will be slippery until the morning hours on Friday. Another weather threat is strong wind, which can reach speeds of up to 150 kilometers per hour in the Tatra Mountains.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first and second degree warnings on a three-level, increasing scale.
Second degree IMWM warnings – strong wind
Level 2 strong wind alerts are in force in the province Lesser Polandin the Tatra district. In this area, winds are expected to have an average speed of up to 40 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 100 km/h, and high Tatra Mountains up to 150 km/h, from the south.
The warnings will be valid until 5 a.m. on Friday.
IMWM first degree warnings – strong wind
Forecasters IMWM issued lower level warnings against strong winds in the following voivodeships:
- Lesser Polandin the following counties: Nowy Targ, Nowy Sącz and Gorlice;
- Podkarpackiein southern counties.
Strong winds with an average speed of up to 35 km/h and gusts of up to 75 km/h are expected to occur from the west and southeast. The alarms will expire at 7 on Friday.
First degree IMWM warnings – heavy snowfall
Yellow alerts for heavy snowfall are in force in the following voivodeships:
- Pomeranianin the following counties: Słupsk, SłupskLębork, Wejherowo, Puck;
- West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin Sławno County;
- Opole provincein the following counties: Nysa, Prudnik, Głubczyce, Kędzierzyn-Koźle;
- Silesianin southern counties.
Snowfall is forecast there, causing the snow cover to increase by 10 to 20 cm in some places. Snow flurries possible locally. Warnings in Pomerania and Western Pomerania will be valid until 6 on Friday, and in other regions they will expire at 8 on the same day.
First degree IMWM warnings – icing
It will be slippery in parts of the country. First degree warnings against icing apply to the following voivodeships:
- Pomeranian;
- West Pomeranian Voivodeshipin the eastern part of the voivodeship;
- Warmian-Masurian Voivodeshipin the counties: Braniewo, ElblągElbląg;
- Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship;
- Greater Polandoutside the following counties: Koło, Turek, Kalisz, KaliszOstrów, Ostrzeszów, Kępiński;
- Lubuskie;
- Lower Silesiacounties: Górowski, Lubin, Głogów, Polkowice, Bolesławiec, Zgorzelec;

- Silesianoutside the counties: Kłobuck, Częstochowa, CzęstochowaLubliniec;

It is forecast that wet road surfaces and sidewalks will freeze after sleet and wet snow, causing them to become icy. The warnings will be in force until 9 on Friday.
