The new duties announced by Donald Trump will not cover smartphones, computers and other electrical devices – according to the Friday message of the American customs office of CBP. The beneficiaries of this decision are American corporations, which are installing a large part of their products in China.

In total, about 20 articles of electronics and technologies were excluded from customs, which are produced outside the United States, including smartphones, computers, semiconductors, solar panels and LCD screens. They constitute the largest part of the goods imported to the USA with China in terms of value.

The decision on devices was made a few days after President Trump suspended for 90 days previously announced duties on most countries and raised to 145 percent of the duties on goods from China.

The announcement shows that these goods were excluded from the latest “mutual” duties in the amount of 125 percent. on China and 10 percent For the rest of the world, but not from those introduced in connection with fentanyl smuggling (20 %).

One of the greatest beneficiaries of the decision are American concerns, especially Apple, which are installing a large part of their products in China. At the same time, in recent days, Trump has signaled that he wanted to conclude with China an agreement on commercial matters, although he pointed out that Beijing must take the first step.

According to the Bloomberg agency, however, the suspension of duties may be temporary and it should not be ruled out that other rates may soon be introduced to these devices.

The announcement of the decision is made after the representatives of the administration, including the US representative for trade Jamieson Greer, excluded the possibility of exceptions from imposed duties. Trade Minister Howard Lutnick announced, however, that duties would make the electronic industry transfer production to the USA. For weeks, President Trump himself also announced the introduction of separate sectoral duties for imported semiconductors.
