The author of a plan to end the war in Ukraine, an advocate of separating children of immigrants illegally entering the US from their parents, and a billionaire advocating tax cuts. These are potential candidates for members of President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet. Many names from the list published by Reuters already accompanied the Republican during his first term.
Reuters has published a list of names of potential candidates for the most important positions in the new cabinet of Donald Trump, who secured victory in this year's presidential elections. Journalists selected, among others, five names of people who could take the position of Secretary of the Treasury, the name of a possible national security advisor and three probable candidates for Secretary of State.
Donald Trump's associates. Who will be the security advisor?
According to Reuters, Donald Trump could see the role of the new Treasury Secretary as, among others, his recent opponent, the head of one of the largest financial holdings in the world, Jamie Dimon. CEO of JP Morgan Chase & Co. he is considered a strong candidate for this position, but – the agency emphasizes – it is not known whether he would accept the job. Although he is an opponent of what he calls unnecessary and burdensome regulations, according to the New York Times, he privately supports Kamala Harris and considers the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 as an event that is close to disqualification from running for public office.
Reuters also lists potential candidates for US Treasury Secretary Scott BessentTrump's economic adviser. He may also be appointed to this position John Paulsona billionaire and major Trump donor who favors tax cuts and deregulation. Paulson himself raised $50 million during one fundraiser for the Republican candidate in April. Trump could also nominate a journalist associated with Fox News as Treasury secretary Larry Kudlowwho was head of the National Economic Council during Donald Trump's first term. The agency also provides the name Robert Lighthizerwho will “almost certainly” be invited to Trump's cabinet, with whom he cooperated already during his first term and played an important role in renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada. However, it is not known whether he will return as Treasury Secretary.
Reuters reports that he could be a potential successor to Jake Sullivan as national security adviser Richard Grenell. He is one of Trump's closest foreign policy advisers. When Trump spoke to the president Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in September, Grenell attended a private meeting. Grenell believes, among other things, that the basis for ending the war in Ukraine are the Minsk agreements. He also accused the president Joe Bidenthat he did not have any conversation with Vladimir Putin.
Reuters lists the candidates for secretary of state as: Robert O'Brien, Trump's former national security adviser. He is a supporter of banning TikTok in the United States, and compared to other Republicans, he is also more favorable to military aid for Ukraine. On the other hand, the position of Secretary of State can also reach Bill Hagertysenator and former U.S. ambassador to Japanwho voted against the military package for Ukraine this year. A senator is also in play, according to Reuters Marco Rubiowho himself wanted to become a candidate for US president in 2016, and was recently tipped to be a candidate for vice president.
They may try to implement the “plan to end the war in Ukraine”
According to Reuters, he could become defense secretary MikeWaltza former soldier and current congressman who handles much of Congress' affairs China. He could also take up the position Mike Pompeoformer boss CIAwho served as Secretary of State in Trump's first term. Pompeo is – as Reuters emphasizes – a fierce defender of Ukraine, thus contrasting with many other politicians from the president-elect's environment. He is also a potential candidate for defense secretary TomCottonsenator and supporter of military aid for Ukraine.
He would be given a high position related to national security Keith Kellogga retired general who is a co-author plan to end the war in Ukraine. This plan assumes, among other things, that Kiev will be deprived of military assistance from Washington if it does not start peace negotiations with Moscow. He can also get a position in the field of national security Kash Pateltipped by some Republicans to be the head of the CIA – however, it is not known whether Congress would agree to his nomination. In an interview last year, Patel promised to pursue politicians and journalists he considers Donald Trump's enemies.
According to Reuters, he may become the secretary of homeland security Tom Homanformer head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agency recalls that he was “the main advocate a controversial child separation policy in which immigrant children who entered the country illegally were held separately from their parents“He is also a candidate for Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolfwho already held the position during Trump's previous term, however he resigned days after the 2021 storming of the Capitol.
Reuters also mentions him as a potential candidate for the position of secretary of homeland security Mark Greenwhich was supposed to be part of the first Trump administration, but was not included in it due to criticism of – as the agency writes – transphobic and Islamophobic statements of the former president.
Reuters lists two possible candidates for attorney general: a former congressman and a prosecutor John Ratcliffe and a senator Mike Leewho – as Reuters reminds – “played a key role in Trump and his allies' attempts to reverse his 2020 election loss,” and also spread conspiracy theories about the storming of the Capitol.
According to Reuters, he may take up the very important position of chief of staff Susie Wilesone of the most important figures in the president-elect's campaign. Her views are not widely known. She could potentially get this position as well Brooke Rollinsformer head of the Domestic Policy Council, with whom Trump has a close personal relationship and who is considered a fairly moderate politician.
Trump is president-elect
Donald Trump won enough electors to ensure victory in the presidential elections. The election was resolved surprisingly quickly. Commentators predicted that we would find out who would take over the White House even a few days after the election. Meanwhile, on Wednesday Polish time we know who will be the 47th president of the USA.
Electors will gather in their state capitals on December 17 to formally cast votes for the presidential and vice-presidential candidates and send the votes to the president of the Senate (this role is played by the vice president and Trump's election rival, Kamala Harris) and the Archivist of the United States. Votes sent in six copies must reach there by December 25, and then the Archivist must send them to the US Congress by January 3 – the day of the inauguration of the new parliament. Three days later, the last formal step will take place – a meeting of the combined houses of Congress, during which the electoral votes will be officially counted and their result approved.
End of the term of office of the outgoing president, inauguration and beginning of the term of office of the new one – January 20.
