The situation in Nysa is truly dramatic. On Monday afternoon, the mayor of the city appealed to the residents for an urgent evacuation. He argued that there was a very high risk of the flood embankments breaking, and with each passing moment it was getting bigger. In the afternoon, the embankment broke at the height of Wyspiańskiego Street. There is a risk that the entire city will be flooded.
Another match of Stal Nysa cancelled
Stal Nysa applied over the weekend to cancel Sunday's PlusLiga match with Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, but initially there was no such agreement. Only a few hours after the matter was made public and the community was outraged did the club from Podkarpacie and the league authorities agree to postpone the match, which was to be played in Rzeszów. Stal's volleyball players wanted to help the remaining residents of Nysa fight the elements.
Stal president Robert Prygiel said that the players saved the cathedral from flooding. – We are proud that they were so involved, they helped, among other things, with unloading sandbags – he praised in an interview with TVP Sport.
The club had no contact with one of the volleyball players, but the club knew that his property had been damaged during the flood. – We know that their properties were badly damaged, so they are still fighting the elements. I assume that they may not have electricity – he said. Let's hope that this state of affairs will change in the coming hours – commented Prygiel.
On September 19, Stal was supposed to play a home match against Skra Bełchatów, but requested a postponement. It is practically impossible to enter Nysa, the city is almost cut off from the world, and soon the whole city may be underwater.
This time the request to cancel the match was processed quickly and without any problems. Below is the statement on the matter presented by Stal.
“Due to the flooding in our city, the home match against Skra BeÅ‚chatów scheduled for September 19 has been postponed. We would like to thank the authorities of PlusLiga PGE GiEK Skra BeÅ‚chatów, as well as Telewizja Polsat for their understanding. We hope that we will return to our own hall soon, although the current situation is difficult. We are safe with our families, and this is the most important thing at the moment. We would like to thank you for all the messages of support and willingness to help. Once again, you have shown that we are all a volleyball family! We will keep you updated on the next steps and upcoming matches,” we read.
The residents of Nysa are to be evacuated in the evening.
– The pressure of playing is weighing on us. The calendar is not made of rubber. On the other hand, we still have two additional halls in Nysa to play in, but the vision of the second wave and the communication problems in the city are overwhelming us. We also don't know if the team shouldn't leave Nysa, but on the other hand, its members can't leave their families and loved ones. I feel helpless – Prygiel confessed.
The PlusLiga started last weekend. The first round will end on Tuesday with the match Norwid CzÄ™stochowa – Åšlepsk SuwaÅ‚ki.
