In early January, northern China was hit by two earthquakes. Footage from surveillance cameras has been released online, showing the heroism of “ordinary people” during the disaster.
One of the videos was recorded in a kindergarten in Yinchuan, Jinfeng district. When the earth shook, two young caregivers rushed to save their children without hesitation. The women embraced the children and led them out of the room to safety. Cooks working at the kindergarten helped evacuate the children from the canteen.
There were also dramatic scenes in the maternity ward of the hospital in Yinchuan. When the earthquake occurred, the nurse on duty immediately ran to the bed containing the baby and shielded it with her body. A moment later, other medics ran into the ward, following the woman's footsteps.
It was not only adults who showed heroism. When students rushed to evacuate at the Foreign Language Experimental School in Yinchuan, one of them, Guo Qing, helped a classmate who was having difficulty moving. Without a moment's hesitation, Guo turned around, knelt down, and then carried the boy out of the classroom on his back. Later, in a conversation with the media, he said that although he was shocked and scared, at that moment all he could think about was helping his friend. The school rewarded the teenager for his courage and selflessness, and his story received wide coverage on Chinese social media.
