European Film Awards 2024 awarded. In the most important category – European Film – the winner was one of the most famous films of the year, “Emilia Pérez” by Jacques Audiard. Its creator was appreciated in the categories of European Director and European Screenwriter. Karla Sofia Gascon, who played the main role in Audiard's film, received the European Actress statuette.

The European Film Awards (EFA) are awarded by 5.4 thousand members of the European Film Academy and are described as the European equivalent of the Oscars. They were first awarded in 1988, and until 1996, winners were awarded Felix statuettes. Since 1997, the awards have been “nameless” and, as before, they are intended to be a form of recognition of outstanding achievements in European cinema.

A great victory for Jacques Audiard

This year, the Academy changed the rules of awarding awards, including opening the European Film category to animated and documentary productions. Therefore, in the 37th edition of the awards, the most important category included not 5, but 15 titles. This year's European Film award went to the film “Emilia Pérez”.

In the European Director and European Screenwriter categories, the legendary French filmmaker Jacques Audiard won for his film “Emilia Pérez”. Audiard was first nominated for the European Film Awards in 2002 for the script for the film “On My Lips”. Then he was nominated, among others, in 2005 and 2009 for directing (for “In the Rhythm of the Heart” and “Proroka” respectively).

When Audiard appeared on stage to receive his second award, he joked: – Stop calling me “Jacques Audiard” and start calling me “Jacques Award”.

Playing the main role in Audiard's film Karla Sofia Gascon won in the European Actress category. Whereas Abou Sangare for his role in the film “The Story of Souleymane” he received the European Actor award.
