Can the high temperature we experience in recent days, and soon its sudden drop, can harm the flowering plants? And what about the fact that it is very warm and there is no rain?

Spring aura came. On Thursday, thermometers in southern Poland showed 22.9 degrees Celsius. But the next week we have quite a lot of cooling. Can such a dynamic aura change in March harm plants?

– In March like in a pot. In one week we have high temperatures, and next snowstorm can come – said Professor Michał Węgrzyn, director of the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University at Krakow. – Plants that appear in early spring are perfectly adapted to variable weather. Nothing really happens to them. For them, there is no problem whether it will be plus 15 degrees, whether there will be a temperature on the minus. They will survive it – he explained. The botanist said that in the Krakow garden all early spring plants are already blooming. These are snowdrops, spring snowstorms, spring ranchers. “Everything blooms beautifully,” he said.

According to the expert, farmers will definitely complain about low rainfall this winter. – The rainfall was very weak. We will also suffer here in the botanical garden here, because this water was extremely few – said Węgrzyn.

Possible water shortages in the environment

A very warm beginning of March may cause that the water in the soil will be insufficiently enough to sow cereals.

– In the past, March was classified as a winter month, so 20 degrees in the plus is not obvious. Something like this will have its consequences – said Bogdan Chojnicki, climatologist, professor at the University of Life Sciences in Cognition. He added that the high temperature and intensive solar radiation make the evaporation high. As a consequence, this can soon lead to a shortage of water in the environment.

– The entire earthly system is part of temperature increases. Not necessarily wet winter behind us. For now, we still have moisture on the ground, but it is decreasing with each day. Then, when it comes to farmers, grain, it may be missing. Then we will all wait for the rain – he added.
