PiS MP Przemysław Czarnek during a discussion in a television studio threatened “leftist ideology”, and as alleged evidence of her bad influence on children, he pointed to students of American schools who “identify with cats, moths” and “walk on all fours.” We checked what the MP could be about. It turns out that he duplicates the false spin of Republicans in the USA. The case concerns a subculture popular for years.

On Saturday, January 25, the Law and Justice candidate for president Karol Nawrocki met with the inhabitants of Oława in Lower Silesia. Referring to the sale case in the bookstore of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the book “Gender Queer. Autobiography” – which was publicized by the opposition, hitting Rafał Trzaskowski – Nawrocki threw the cover of this book into the shredder. At the same time, he repeated the false message of the right that it was “for children”, that “indoctrination of children” was conducted in MSN. (We verified this in the concrete24). A day later, this book and Nawrocki's statements were one of the topics discussion in the program “Rymanowski Breakfast” in Polsat News.

He spoke, among others PiS MP Przemysław Czarnek, former Minister of Education in the United Right government. Turning to the deputy minister of health Wojciech Konieczny from the left, he said: “Well, it's not like that, doctor, Mr. Spring that this is all about gender and sex. Well In American schools, near Washington, up to twenty percent of children through your identification other than human reality, they identify with cats, moths, walk on all fours. Leftist ideology led to this degradation. Your leftist gender ideology! ”

What could MP Czarnk be about? Most likely, the same thing that the far -right Republicans in the USA chose their goal. Only their message turned out to be a manipulated narrative about the fur fandom.

Electoral narrative of republicans in the USA. No evidence. Dementia of schools

We did not find any English -speaking and Polish sources of information that would confirm the fact or specific event that up to 20 percent of school students at Washington or the Colombia district “identified with cats, moths” and “walked on all fours”. However, it is not without reason that MP Czarnek spoke about the United States – because the messages that threaten youth allegedly identifying as animals have been present in the American infoster for at least a few years.

In 2022, during the Congress election campaign, some conservative candidates of Republicans convinced voters – without presenting any evidence – that in some American schools students identifying as cats can use the litter box instead of the toilet. Such situations were supposed to reach, among others in Minnesota, Colorado and Tennessee. Politicians' statements were cited by the media. In October 2022, NBC News journalists They added At least 20 politicians of the Republican party claiming that schools provide various amenities to students who identify as cats.

However, each of the school districts indicated by these politicians – in official messages or in response to the NBC News question – stated that Republican claims are not true. “There is no evidence that any school has provided cuvettes for students because they identify as cats,” NBC News reported. In 2022, these reports were also denied by other American editorial offices, including CNN, Reuters, Associated Press and a fact-checking service Politifact.

Not a single situation that the Republicans talked about. There is no evidence that students in the USA identify themselves as animals and disturb the order in the classes with their behavior, e.g. measuring or purring – the editors explained in the summer of 2022 in the summer of 2022 Reuters.

Who are the furries. When you wear fursuts

Republican politicians referred their message to young people belonging to the Furries, or furry fandom. This is how people belonging to the subculture of the so -called furry art. It consists of creators of works depicting anthropomorphic animals and those who imitate various creatures with behavior and appearance. Dr. Sharon Roberts, co -founder of the International Anthropomorphic Research Project known as Fury – This is a group of interdisciplinary professors who have been studying Furry Fandom and other groups of fans for over 15 years – she explained in an interview with the website Vicethat media messages usually distort the reality of this subculture.

Meanwhile, Furries is a fandom known for decades, whose beginnings reach 70s Its members – children and adults – change and incarnate in the roles of anthropomorphic animal forms. We know such characters, among others from animated films, fairy tales or comics. Members of this subculture have been organizing conventions and meetings for years around the worldincluding in Poland. In 2025, such events were planned, including in Gdańsk, Łódź and Wrocław.

Let's explain: Fandom is a community focused on common interest. For many people, fandom is a way to build social relations with others. For example, fandoms are made up of anime fans, fans of the singer Taylor Swift, fans of films from the series “Star Wars” or books from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

“Many people think that furry people change as animals. Some think that they dress so all the time. But this is not entirely true” – he explains in the text for The Conversation The above -mentioned Dr. Sharon E. Roberts. “Furry do not identify as animals; identify with animals. Like cosplayers, they usually do not believe that they are a real Spiderman, so furrs do not think that they are their furses (these are their own animal persons – ed.) ” – explains Roberts (thickening from the editorial office). The researcher emphasizes that the furry subculture is not a sexual orientation. “It is worth noting, however, that there are many marginalized groups in the fur community. Depending on the study, over 70 percent of furrs identify as LGBTQ+, and over 25 percent are people with different sexual identity” – he writes.

Talking to the Vice service about the ways in which furrs express themselves through the external appearance, Dr. Roberts explained: “Fursuits (i.e. costumes – ed.) Certainly attract the most attention, and researchers allow you to keep the identity of their interlocutors secretly. However, only about 15 percent of furries have such costumes, for the rest they remain a much too expensive investment. Cheap Fursuit is an expense of 3 Thousands of dollars (over PLN 12.5 thousand). How to spend such an amount on a disguise.

The researcher explained that Fursuts are put primarily on furrows. “For example, when you have a bowling alley, you can arrange a meeting for people in costumes. You always have to get permission in advance, but if it comes to what, we'll simply see a group of people who have fun and by the way is in Furyes. In such a situation, they will go to some exit or participate in the parade. Identity element ” – she said.

In 2022 – when the Republicans promoted their thesis about young people dealing with the litter box – prof. Courtney Plante told the editorial office of Reuters that “the claim that there is a pandemic of furries eating from dog bowls or barking and hissing in lessons” has been circulating on the internet for over a decade. “And yet, despite the examination of thousands of furries, we did not find any evidence in support of this thesis … If there was such an epidemic of children of outflowing and measuring in schools, it would probably be easy to find them and put them in front of the camera (or at least in front of one of their teachers!) ” – he noted.

In their messages, American Republicans often confused Fragry Fandom with Therians. “Terians believe in the depths of their souls that they are trapped in the human body while they are to belong to another species,” said Reuters agency Dr. Kathy Gerbasi, a psychologist specializing in the study of Furry and Therian subcultures.
