A rescue operation is underway after the avalanche descent in northern India. On Friday, 55 road workers were imprisoned under the mass of snow. According to local media, rescuers reached most people, but not everyone was saved.
The snow avalanche came down On Friday in the Chambola District, Uttarakhand. 55 road workers worked at the crash site, who were buried under snow masses – initially local media reported 57 imprisoned.
Pushkar Singh Dhami from the state administration said that until Saturday morning 50 out of 55 people were found. At least five workers were killed – four people died in the hospital, and the body of one was extracted from under the snow. The fate of five construction staff remains unknown.

The rescue operation carried out in the region is very difficult. Heavy rain and snow prevented the use of helicopters for many hours. Atmospheric conditions improved only in the evening. The roads buried under the snow made it difficult to reach the place of disaster by land.
– A rescue operation is underway. The army, civil defense, district administration, everyone is here and working. There is a lot of snow, so it is a challenge, but we try to create access roads to the disaster – said Dhami on Saturday.
Workers worked on a highway near Badrinath Dham, a well -known place of pilgrimage to a Hindu temple. This road connects the villages of Ghastoli and Mana. The avalanche went down on Friday afternoon, and earlier heavy snowfall went through the region.
