Unknown perpetrators fired on the automatic weapon of the prison gate in the city of Tulon. According to the information of the UFAP prison officers, in the cities of Villepinte, Nanterre, Aix-Luynes and Valence cars belonging to employees of prisons parked in front of the buildings were set on fire. In the city of Nancy, an employee was threatened at his house. An attempt to set fire was also recorded in Marseille.

Information about events was confirmed by Minister of Justice Gerald Darmanin. He said that he would go to Tulon to show support for injured employees.

Attacks on French prisons

According to the media, night attacks are the response of criminals to government aimed at drug smuggling. Minister Darmanin, together with the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, set for priority to fight drug crimes and increase the safety of prisons – writes Reuters. “The French Republic faces the problem of drug trafficking and undertakes actions that are aimed at breaking criminal nets” – wrote Darmanin on the website X in response to attacks.

It is not clear who conducted the attacks or whether individual cases were coordinated. One of the collaborators of the head of the Ministry of Justice in an interview with the AFP agency assessed, however, that the incidents are “coordinated and obviously related to the minister's strategy regarding the fight against drug crime.”

An investigation into attacks is underway. Minister Bruno Retailleau said that he ordered local authorities, police and gendarmerie, an immediate increase in staff protection and prisoners. In February, the minister informed that in 11 months 2024 France Record 47 tons of cocaine (23 tons a year earlier). He emphasized that his country was overwhelmed by “white tsunami”. Minister Darcinin announced the creation of special prisons for the most dangerous drug gangsters. Until now, two penalty plants have been designated to perform such a function.
