The Golden Globes 2025 traditionally open the film awards season, which will be closed by the Oscar ceremony. This year's list of nominations was dominated by Jacques Audiard's work “Emilia Pérez”, which has already gone down in the history of “little Oscars” – as the awards are called. However, the Frenchman's film has very strong competition.
The Golden Globes, which have been the awards of The Golden Globes Foundation since last year, are fighting for their former prestige and the title of “little Oscars”. What distinguishes the former Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards is that they combine the worlds of film and television. Even though the Golden Globes have faced a crisis for several years, they are still an important indication of what the Oscar verdict may look like.
The 82nd “little Oscars” ceremony is also traditionally held at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The host of the gala for the first time is Nikki Glaser – an American actress, comedian and TV presenter. The stars presenting awards in individual categories included: Andrew Garfield, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ariana DeBose, Auliʻi Cravalho, Awkwafina, Brandi Carlile, Catherine O'Hara, Demi Moore, Dwayne JohnsonElton John, Gal Gadot, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, Jennifer Coolidge, Kaley Cuoco, Kate Hudson, Kathy Bates, Ke Huy Quan, Kerry Washington, Margaret Qualley, Melissa McCarthy, Michael Keaton, Michelle Yeoh, Salma Hayek Pinault, Sarah Paulson , Seth Rogen, Sharon Stone and Viola Davis.
Golden Globes 2025. First winners
The latter – a legend of American cinema and one of the greatest actresses of the 21st century – is also this year's winner of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Davis is the first African American to win the Triple Crown of Acting. Oscara Tony Award and an Emmy Award, all in acting categories. She is also the most awarded African-American woman in the history of American acting (she has won awards for her roles in films, television and theater).
The winner of the Carol Burnett Award was the outstanding television actor Ted Danson, who gained fame for his role as Sam Malone in the legendary sitcom “Cheers!”. Moreover, not only fame, but also two Emmy Awards (out of 11 nominations) and two Golden Globes (out of 7 nominations). Danson was also appreciated for his roles in the television film “Something About Amelia”, the sitcom “How Can You, Doctor?”, the drama series “Uklady” and, in recent years, the series “Good Place”. Danson received a Golden Globe nomination on Monday for his leading role in the comedy series “The Confidential Informant.”
Golden Globes 2025. The historic result of “Emilia Pérez” and Polish chances for awards
Jacques Audiard's latest film “Emilia Pérez”, which is a combination of a musical, thriller and action film, has already made history at the Golden Globes, winning 10 nominations. This makes Audiard's work the most nominated comedy or musical film in the history of these awards, overtaking Bob Fosse's “Cabaret” from 1972 and Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” from 2023, which each received nine nominations. Taking into account both dramatic films and comedy/musical films, the undefeated record holder remains Robert Altman's drama “Nashville” from 1975, which received 11 nominations.
Additionally, Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the title role in Audiard's film, is the first transgender woman nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy/musical. The Frenchman himself is one of three people nominated three times this year. Audiard has a chance to win awards in three categories: best director, best script and best song – for “El Mal”, which he wrote together with Camille and Clément Ducol. Camille and Clément Ducol were also nominated for the song “Mi Camino” and in the best music category.
This year's nominated films include two Polish co-productions: “The Girl with the Needle” directed by Magnus von Horn and “True Pain” directed by Jesse Eisenberg. “Girl with a Needle” is the first film by a Polish director since “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski, who was among the nominees in the best foreign language film category – born in Sweden von Horn also has Polish citizenship.
“True Pain” received four nominations, including in the best film – comedy or musical category. One of its producers is Ewa Puszczyńska. Last year, the historical drama “Stream of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer, which she co-produced, was nominated in the best drama film category.
