Sławomir Mentzen during meetings with voters as part of the presidential campaign claims that the European Union climate activities strive to decrease temperature by one degree of Celsius. The MP is misleading – confuses a decrease in temperature with a reduction in average temperature in the world. We explain.
The route around Poland Sławomir Mentzen has been going on since September 2024. Recently, the confederation MP and candidate in the presidential election visited cities in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. One of them was Nidzica, where Mentzen arrived on February 6. On the Nidzica market, the politician said, among others on a migration packet, energy prices and a tax system.
Mentzen also criticized the European Union's activities in the field of climate policy. “And this green order is such a nonsense idea that you have to reject as soon as possible and reject – there is nothing to wonder” – he said. “It is an idea that we are to spend a trillion of zlotys from our pockets, billions of zlotys. Not millions. Billions! What? To make it one degree cooler. We are forcibly renovating houses, apartments; replace the doors, windows, heat sources; replace combustion cars with electric, gas stations for charging stations; close the smelters, factories, mines, power plants; destroy industry, destroy agriculture. Billions of gold from our pocket. What for? That it would be one degree cooler“” Well, who would take 100,000 zlotys out of your pocket, so that in 20 years there was one degree cooler? ” – he added after a while.
In turn, in Wałcz, on February 13, he said: “Someone calculated – it is not [ktoś] From Poland, [ktoś] There from the west – that every Pole will pay for this transformation [energetyczną] PLN 250,000; Like a family of four is a million. PLN 250,000 per person. In the name of what? What should we get so sobbing for? To make it one degree cooler in 20 years. Really, it is worth investing so much money. Let any of you go to your grandparents and parents. Say: 'I have a great investment for my grandmother – let my grandmother spend 250,000 zlotys, as a result, grandma will have one degree of cooler' as the result of this investment. “
Talking about the “one degree” is a permanent element of the confederation leader. Similar words were said, among others at meetings with voters in Gniezno (February 1), or in Przasnysz (February 2).

It is not about a decrease in temperature
The presidential candidate is wrong when he says that the goal of the EU climate policy, green order and energy transformation is to reduce the temperature by one degree of Celsius. The goals of the EU (and not only) climate policy were included in the so -called Paris Agreement of 2015. Its assumption does not talk about one, and 1.5 degrees Celsius, and additionally refers to a different change than Mentzen claims. We explain.
In December 2015, at a climate conference in Paris, its participants, in Poland and other European Union countries, signed the so -called Parisian agreement. This international treaty obliges you to operate for the fight against climate change. His The main goal is to maintain the growth of global medium temperatures at a level less than two degrees Celsius in relation to the pre -industrial era and continuing efforts to reduce temperature growth to 1.5 degrees – this is a long -term goal proposed by the treaty. “The world temperature increase until the end of the century should not exceed 1.5 ° C” – We read on EU pages.
Lowering the temperature is not the same as stopping its growth; The purpose of the Parisian agreements is the latter.Consilium.europa.eu
So it's not about a decrease in temperature by one degree of Celsius, as Mentzen claims, but about stopping average temperatures at a level not higher than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The ratification of the Paris Agreement by the EU took place on October 5, 2016, and on November 4, 2016 it entered into force. The Polish Sejm, the Ratification Act, adopted the Paris decision on October 6, 2016 and on the same day it was signed by Andrzej Duda. Importantly, however, the Paris Pact is a global agreement, not just European. European green order is a form of their implementation.
The expert explains: climate system like a human body
We have already informed about the increase in average temperature in 2022. Then he explained It is an climatologist from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, prof. Bogdan Chojnicki: – Generally, 1.5 degrees makes a small impression, but in understanding how important this matter is, let's use a simple comparison. Normal human body temperature is 36.6 degrees Celsius. Let's imagine now that it has been increasing by one and a half degrees for some time. Let's try to function normally in everyday life with a temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius. It will be difficult – said prof. Chojnicki. – Similarly, the climate system is in a certain state of balance. This is a dynamic balance, once it is warmer, then a little colder, but the average atmosphere temperature is unchanged. The deviation of this state by an additional one and a half, two degrees Celsius is a tectonic change, which means a problem for the lives of all humanity – he explained.
Professor Chojnicki in 2022 alarmed that the global temperature – compared to the level from before the pre -industrial era – was already one degree higher.
– Why are we afraid to cross the threshold of one and a half degree? Because we will not be able to reverse this change. The increase in average temperature by 1.5 degrees in the world is an increase in the likelihood of longer and more severe drieds, but also by the precipitation. The increase in temperature is the intensification of the evaporation process and where enough rain will not fall, we will have more and more problems with driedders. This will also increase the likelihood of fires. Further heat waves will be a challenge for the elderly, they can, after all, threaten their health and life – explained prof. Chojnicki.
About the fact that The Earth's temperature limit has been exceeded In November 2023, a researcher from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) organization, Dr. Samantha Burgess, announced by the European Commission. She reported that on November 17, 2023, it was the first day, “in which the global temperature was over 2 degrees Celsius higher than in 1850-1900 (or from the pre-industrial era) and was 2.06 degrees Celsius.”
The threshold was not permanently exceeded, which the researcher admitted in interview for CNN. She also stated that this result “does not mean that the Paris agreement was violated”. However, she added that more days as November 17, 2023 should be expected more.
However, at the beginning of 2025 C3S handed overthat 2024 was the warmest year in the history of measurements. The average global temperature was 15.1 degrees Celsius. It was also reported that 2024 was the first 12-month period in which a symbolic threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius was exceeded by medium global temperature growth compared to the times before the industrial era. C3S experts also alerted that “quick and decisive actions can still change the trajectory of our future climate” (translated by ed.).
The data is alarming, and politicians, including Sławomir Mentzen, present the findings of the Paris Agreement in a mistake in such a way as to undermine the significance of the EU climate activities.
This is not the first time a public figure incorrectly interprets this number of 1.5 degrees C. In June 2022, the fact that the purpose of the EU climate law and justice Beata Kempa. Concrete24.
