According to most Americans, Kamala Harris won the debate with Donald Trump. The candidates addressed different voters, so their goals during the debate were different – noted public speaking trainer Barbara Krysztofczyk and personal development trainer Przemysław Lelewski in the program “Dzień na świata” on TVN24 BiS.
On Wednesday night, Polish time, there was a debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – candidates for President of the United States. According to 63 percent of respondents, the debate was won Kamala Harris – results from survey published by CNN.
Public speaking coach Barbara Krysztofczyk pointed out in the program “Dzień na świata” on TVN24 BiS that already at the beginning of the debate, Kamala Harris, by shaking hands with Donald Trump, “used a trick that she could not lose after”. – If he had not shaken her hand, it would have strengthened his image, and if he had shaken her hand, which he did, she took the initiative, and he seemed to have given in to her – she added.
Barbara Krysztofczyk pointed out that the vice president USA “she used several previously prepared procedures which – as was evident from her body language – had been practiced beforehand.”
– Then, when she saw that Trump wasn't very confident, it was obvious from the very beginning that he wasn't himself, her confidence grew and she was getting better and better during the debate – she assessed.
Trump “lost his nerves”
Personal development trainer Przemysław Lelewski emphasized that the vice president, in order to throw her rival off balance, used tactics previously used in her work as a state prosecutor.
He suggested that Donald Trump “could have responded to Harris's stunts by naming what he felt.” – But he couldn't afford to do that, because he knew she wouldn't do it calmly – he said. Przemysław Lelewski stated that “there were moments during the debate when Trump lost his nerves.”
– I always emphasize one thing: let's try to listen to the same debate on the radio and see who we will then consider the winner – he recommended and pointed to the debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, during which, in the opinion of television viewers, Kennedy won, and in the opinion of radio listeners, Nixon triumphed.
Harris wanted to show that she “will be a president who knows how to listen”
Barbara Krysztofczyk, when asked about the issue of speaking directly to the camera, pointed out that both candidates addressed different voters, so their goals during the debate were different. She emphasized that when Harris spoke to Trump, she addressed him, and when she spoke to citizens, she looked directly at the camera.
She assessed that Harris was building a message that – unlike Trump – she “will be a president who knows how to listen.” – So she also had to show that she knows how to listen and in connection with that she was staring into his ear, because she knew that the camera would show it that way and it would look as if she was listening to him – she pointed out.
– But he wants to show that she is not an equal interlocutor for him, that he is above her, that he could debate with Biden or Obama. Therefore, he did not feel obliged to talk to her on an equal footing – she explained.
Harris and Trump appealed to different groups of voters
Przemysław Lelewski noticed that when Harris spoke about socially important issues, she addressed the audience. – If voters in the United States need a leader who will take care of them, give them a sense of security, but will also be there for them, then Kamala Harris did much better – he assessed.
– So voters who say they need a strong, fighting leader who goes out and sets boundaries, it will be Trump. If we say we need a leader who will take care of our emotions in difficult times, who will lead us to development, but also take care of society, it will be Kamala Harris – he added.
