A driver at the end of last year on the island of Santa Cruz on Galapagos hit a giant turtle by car. The animal did not survive. Now the man is to pay a fine of over $ 13,000.

The management of the Galapagos National Park (DPNG) imposed a fine of $ 13,248 (PLN 53,587) on the driver responsible for the accident in which the giant turtle died (Aldabrachelys Gigantea). The incident occurred in December on Baltra Avenue street on the island of Santa Cruz. According to the truth of Galapagos, this act is punishable by punishment, because this reptile is an endangered species of extinction and protected.

Another accident in the new year

The management of the National Park appealed to drivers for caution, because on Tuesday another huge turtle was hit by another driver. The island authorities have announced that the new incident would be thoroughly examined. Drivers are also threatened with a fine.

“We remind drivers how important it is to move carefully on the roads to ensure the safety of passengers and turtles crossing the roads” – we read in a statement.

Long -lived turtles

The giant turtle belongs to the family of terrestrial turtles (Testudinidae). This is one of the largest turtles in the world. His caraapax (dorsal part of the armor) measures an average of 120 centimeters, but it can also reach 150 cm. Males weigh on average 250 kilograms. Giant turtles are a long -lived species, they can live over 100 years.

Galapagos Islands is a biosphere reserve with unique flora and fauna. In the past, there were 15 species of turtles, three of which were extinct hundreds of years ago. The population of giant turtles over hundreds of years has decreased significantly, in the nineteenth century it had about 200,000 individuals, currently it has only a dozen or so thousand. This species was made famous by Karol Darwin, a British naturalist who conducted many studies in the field of evolution theory in the Galapagos Islands. They have become a symbol of the islands, as well as the leg.
