Rafał Kazimierczak: A simple question, although the answer is certainly not: why did you become an actor, not an athlete, since sport did you love and still loves?
Daniel Olbrychski: Actually, athletes mobilized me to achieve something significant in my life. It was sport that shaped me, still in Podlasie, where I spent my childhood. There was no electricity there, but there were such radios, for headphones, I don't know what it is technically called. And I listened to this radio. My mother noted that I was to listen to the Polish Radio Theater, so through these headphones I met the classics of Polish theater, performed by the greatest actors, which also fascinated me in my childhood. But I was even more fascinated by sports broadcasts, a room race, which I remember since 1953, when I was eight years old. Staszek Królak was in the top ten then. Race of Peace and European Boxing Championships, also 1953, in Warsaw, two months after Stalin's death.

Feliks Stamm's diaries have not yet come out, which I later read with more interest than Sienkiewicz's “trilogy”. I remember these finals, this voice of the rapporteur, who was Bogdan Tomaszewski, my later friend and author of, among others, the script for the film “Boxer”. I remember Mazurek Dąbrowski five times. As a child, I knew these boxers better than the heroes of the “trilogy”.
