The Sajjeret Matkal unit is known for intelligence missions and operations behind enemy lines. Her successes include, among others: Operation Entebbe – the recovery in 1976 of a French passenger plane with 248 passengers and 12 crew members, hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists to Uganda.
Sejjeret Matkal is prepared for rescuing hostagesbattlefield intelligence gathering and anti-terrorist operations. The unit he will join is modeled on the British SAS. In terms of purpose, it is compared to the American Delta Force.
Israel. The first woman in the elite unit
More than a year ago, the Israeli army announced the launch of a pilot program aimed at assessment of women's usefulness in several units previously inaccessible to them – including Sayeret Matkal.
This undertaking was the result of an interpellation by the Supreme Court, which demanded an explanation why women were not allowed to serve in all military units. The court did so following a petition submitted in 2020 by four young Israeli women demanding that women be allowed to join any army unit – including Sayeret Matkal, the naval unit Shayetet 13 and the secret counterterrorism unit Duvdewan.
After the decision to start the pilot program, the armed forces informed that the process of selecting female soldiers for these pilot programs would be identical as in the case of men.
