Successor elections

Earlier in the day, a special electoral college consisting of parliamentarians, mostly from the pro-Russian Georgian Dream, and representatives of local authorities, elected the president of Georgia. The politician and former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili became the leaderput forward by the ruling Georgian Dream. He was the only candidate for this position. Salome Zurabishvili announced that she will not leave office and will not recognize the election of the new president.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze congratulated the president-elect on his victory. In his opinion, “the election of Kavelashvili will significantly contribute to strengthening Georgian statehood and sovereignty.” – Georgia has not had such a patriotic and mentally balanced president for over 20 years. Kavelashvili's presidency will be a turning point for our country, said the head of government.

– Even though we have “red lines”, we are ready to do everything to ensure that Georgia stays member of the European Union. The same position is taken by the newly elected president Mikheil Kavelashvili, said the head of the Georgian government.

– We believe that Georgia's accession to the European Union is fully realistic by 2030 – said Kobachidze. This is how he referred to suspension of government talks on the country's accession to the EU until 2028, announced on November 28. This decision caused a wave of anti-government protests numbering thousands of people.

Zurabishvili: no one elected anyone

After the announcement of the presidential election results, Zurabishvili came out to citizens gathered near her residence, Orbeliani Palace. As reported by Echo Kawkaza (Radio Swoboda), the leader said that “no one elected anyone, nothing happened.”

The participants of the anti-government protest in front of the parliament building accepted the results of the presidential elections very calmly. Without emotion, they watched the members of the electoral college leave the meeting room. However, the demonstrators do not leave the square in front of the parliament, which is surrounded by a police cordon.
