With the arrival of warmer days in most European countries, a tick season began. These arachnids are usually active from spring to autumn, especially in forested or grassy areas. Ticks can be carriers of Lyme disease, in addition, they can also carry a virus that causes tick -borne encephalitis (KZM).

New maps, published by the European Center for Prevention and Disease Control (ECDC), show that the most KZM cases occur in Central, Eastern and Northern Europe. Maps were created on the basis of data from 2019-2023.

The most cases of KZM in 2019-2023 were recorded in Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic. In these countries, more than 15 cases of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded in places.

From 5 to 15 cases KZM per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded in Norway, Sweden, Finland, northeastern Poland, and also in Slovenia.

From the map, which included only data from 2023, it follows that most cases of this disease were recorded in north-eastern Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, in the southern part of Sweden. In these places, more than 15 cases of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded in places.

5-15 cases of KZM per 100,000 inhabitants appeared in Finland, Norway, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
