Lodz. After four months, almost as many fire victims as in a whole year. Firefighters sound the alarm and call for the purchase of smoke detectors

In the first four months of 2023, almost as many people died in fires as in the entire previous year, according to the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Łódź. The officers point out that there is no one specific reason for the alarming increase in victims, but they appeal to install smoke detectors in homes, because it is smoke – not fire – that most often leads to death.

According to the data of the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Łódź, 29 people died in fires in the Łódź Voivodeship in 2022. There are already 24 victims in the first four months of this year alone. – On the one hand, we see that the level of awareness related to security is improving in the country, as well as first aid skills. On the other hand, we see very disturbing statistics – says junior captain Łukasz Górczyński from the Łódź fire brigade.

He emphasizes that in 2022 at this time of year there were 14 victims. – Our observation is that many tragedies could be avoided if smoke detectors were installed in the houses where the fire occurred. It is smoke, not fire, as it is commonly believed, that is most often the cause of death of fire victims – says the young captain. Gorczewski.

Without a single cause

Firefighters emphasize that since 2018, the number of victims of fires in the province has been steadily decreasing. Until now.

– It is difficult to pinpoint one specific cause. The victims died in skyscrapers and single-family houses. These were very different situations – emphasizes Łukasz Górczewski in front of the TVN24 camera.

He adds that the situation is so mysterious that the number of incidents at home also decreased during the restrictions introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

– There were much fewer events then, although many people did not leave their homes and only on this basis one could expect that there would be more events than usual – the firefighter reports.
