When Maja was born, her chances of survival were slim. The girl had very serious heart defects. Thanks to the efforts of doctors from the Polish Mother's Health Center in Łódź, the child was saved. Now he is at home in Legnica. Mrs. Malwina, Maja's mother, talks about what happened as a miracle. She says that her daughter “affected” almost all postoperative complications. She dealt with everyone.
– Doctors say clearly: it was a miracle. Maja's mother was told in the first hours after birth that the baby had a one percent chance of survival. Of course, in the future, the girl will undergo further cardiac surgery, but in this case we can talk about a great success – Maja, who fought for herself, but also the doctors from the Polish Mother's Health Center in Łódź – said our reporter Katarzyna Pasikowska-Poczopko on TVN24.

A combination of two very serious heart defects
– When Mrs. Malwina came across the so-called half-ultrasound, doctor Katarzyna Zych-Krekora, looked at the image of the heart on the ultrasound for several dozen minutes and couldn't believe it. It turned out that Maja had a combination of two very serious heart defects. Figuratively speaking, blood could flow into the heart, but had no way to get out – explained Pasikowska-Poczopko.
However, Dr. Katarzyna Zych-Krekora told our camera that the doctor who referred Mrs. Malwina for ultrasound examinations hoped that the valve could be unblocked during the child's prenatal life.
– It turned out that there were many more complications, and Maja's mother had contraindications to the procedure. It was necessary to wait, monitor the fetus and end the pregnancy at the right time, said Dr. Zych-Krekora.

Immediately after birth, she was taken to the operating room
The pregnancy was maintained until the 34th week. It had to be solved because the child's condition was critical.
At the Polish Mother's Health Center in Łódź, a whole team of doctors was waiting for Mrs. Malwina. After birth, the baby was immediately taken to the operating room. The girl underwent three surgeries. She was admitted to the intensive care unit.
– The combination of two such extremely serious defects is unusual. The chances of survival were minimal. That's why we talk about a miracle. If it weren't for the necessary, in this case, premature birth, the baby would actually have no chance. And if it were not for the early interventions of interventional cardiology, and then cardiac surgery – said Dr. Katarzyna Fortecka-Piestrzeniewicz from the Clinic of Intensive Care and Congenital Defects of Newborns and Infants in front of our camera.

Mai's mother: she is very strong
Maja stayed in the hospital for many months. Now he is in Legnica, at home with his parents.
– She's very strong. After each surgery it was very bad. She always suffered from almost all post-operative complications. She dealt with everyone. She doesn't look like a sick child at all – Maja's mother, Malwina Jungowska-Szkołut, said on our show.
She added that the child's health is constantly monitored and parents go for check-ups.
