In the middle of the year, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways plans to announce a tender for widening to three, and in places to four A2 highway belts from the Łódź North junction to the Konotopa junction near Warsaw. – If the tender procedure goes without interference, contracts with contractors will be signed without undue delay and this should take place this year – informs the spokesman for the GDDKiA branch in Łódź in an interview with tvn24.pl.

The expansion of one of the most crowded roads in Poland – the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw has been talked about since 2022. At the end of November 2024, we informed that applications for a decision on permission to implement a road investment were submitted to the Łódź Voivode and the Masovian Voivode.

Now, as the spokesman of the Łódź branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways informs us, it is planned to announce a tender for the expansion of the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw with additional lanes, at the end of the first half of this year. – Of course, it should be borne in mind that this is strictly dependent on when we get ZRID decisions. However, the question of whether it is possible to sign contracts with contractors, the answer is affirmative, although, as in the previous case, not everything depends on us. If the tender procedure goes without interference, contracts with contractors will be signed without undue delay and it should take place this year – Maciej Zalewski tells us.

A2 expanded with four lanes

Ultimately, the A2 motorway will have three lanes in both directions on the section from the Łódź North junction to the Pruszków junction and four lanes from the Pruszków junction to the Konotopa junction. The works will take place on the movement. – The expansion of the route is primarily aimed at increasing the capacity of this strategic thoroughfare, and thus shortening the travel time and improvement of safety – argues Maciej Zalewski. – What distinguishes this project from others is the energy self -sufficiency of the modernized route. Our task will therefore be not only the addition of additional lanes, but also the installation of renewable energy installations to power road infrastructure and lighting installation. All installations related to the road (lighting, meteo stations, etc.) are to be powered from renewable energy sources. The solutions used on this section of the highway are to be a pattern that we will be able to use when building or expanding other sections managed by GDDKiA – sums up the GDDKiA spokesman in Łódź.

One of the most crowded roads

GDDKiA convinced in a statement at the end of last year that “both entrepreneurs running transport companies and ordinary drivers were waiting for the expansion of the highway between Łódź and Warsaw.” “The route built over a decade is one of the most crowded road sections in Poland. According to the last general traffic measurement, the number of vehicles moving each day between Łódź and Warsaw, depending on the place and pores, ranges from over 50,000 to nearly 100,000” road workers pointed out.
