Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban does not like settlements. He told me this directly, explaining the decision on asylum for Marcin Romanowski – wrote Prime Minister Donald Tusk on social media on Saturday.

In a conversation with journalists, the head of the prime minister's office, Gergely Gulyas, argued that this decision results from the Hungarian authorities' belief that there is a crisis of the rule of law in Poland. Romanowski is wanted on a European Arrest Warrant, and the prosecutor's office accuses him of committing a number of crimes, including participation in an organized criminal group.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister commented on the granting of asylum to Romanowski by the Hungarian authorities on the X platform Donald Tusk.
“Prime Minister Orban does not like settlements. He told me this directly when explaining the decision on asylum,” wrote the head of government. As he added, “politics is simpler than some people think.”
“Our goal is to keep conflicts with Poland at a reasonable level”
On Saturday, at a conference in Budapest summarizing the last year of the prime minister's rule Viktor Orbán he said that Hungary's goal “is to keep conflicts with Poland at a reasonable level.” – That is why I will not comment on what I think about the state of the rule of law in Poland – he added.
The politician stated that the Hungarian side had analyzed the situation in Poland and on this basis the relevant minister issued a decision to grant asylum to Romanowski. – I must admit that I think that this will not be the last such decision – admitted Orban.
Orban asked if he was the former president of Orlen Daniel Obajtek may receive asylum next, he stated that he is an MEP, so there are no such plans. – However, cases of asylum being granted may still occur – said the Hungarian Prime Minister.
In 2018, asylum in Hungary was granted to the former Prime Minister of the current North Macedonia, Nikola Gruewski (he was head of government in 2006-2016), who was sentenced to two years in prison for corruption in his country. In turn, at the beginning of June this year, investigative journalists from the website Frontstory.pl reported that Daniel Obajtek, the former head of Orlen, who was then wanted in Poland by the investigative commission and the prosecutor's office, had been staying in a luxury hotel in Budapest for several months.
