The police summarized the past year on the roads. In the capital garrison there were fewer fatal accidents, but the number of people injured in them increased. Warsaw officers detained more than half as many driving licenses than in 2023. However, the number of drivers arrested under the influence of alcohol and drugs decreased. Masovian police officers, in turn, calculated that, on average, every day they stop four to five drivers who should not drive due to court bans or court decisions.

On Thursday, the Warsaw Police Headquarters published statistics on road safety in 2024. The data concerns Warsaw and nine neighboring counties that are part of the capital garrison (Nowy Dwór, West Warsaw, Legionowo, Wołomin, Minsk, Otwock, Piaseczno, Pruszków, Grodzisk).

They show that in the last year there were road accidents died 87 peoplea year earlier – 103. However, the number of people injured in road accidents increased – 1,353 were injured people (more by 198).

KSP also recorded an increase in the total number of accidents for another year in a row. In 2024, it was present in the entire capital garrison 1,197 accidents (increase by 152).

A large increase in the number of suspended driving licenses

The number has also increased suspended driving licenses. In 2023, they were arrested 3327and in the next one 5146. According to KSP, this is an increase of almost 55 percent.

“The number of drivers without driving licenses and those who violated court driving bans remains at a comparable level,” KSP said. However, the specific number of drivers caught driving illegally was not indicated.

Fewer drunk drivers

The number of drivers under the influence and after drinking alcohol and the number of crimes they committed also decreased – by 23 percent in Warsaw (in 2023 – 758 and in 2024 – 583 people) and by over 18 percent in the garrison (1,802 and 1,470 people respectively). There were also fewer offenses committed by them – by 17 percent in Warsaw and by 14 percent in the garrison.

“Since March 14 last year, units and organizational units of the capital police garrison temporarily seized 317 motor vehicles“- reported KSP.

Recall that new regulations enabling the police to confiscate cars of drunk drivers entered into force in March 2024.

According to the amendment to the Penal Code, car forfeiture is to be applied in cases where the driver has at least 1.5 per mille of alcohol in his blood or if he causes an accident with at least per mille of alcohol in his blood. Forfeiture is also to be imposed if the perpetrator drove a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (blood alcohol concentration exceeded 0.5 per mille) during the period of driving ban or if the perpetrator was previously legally convicted of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or under the influence of a narcotic drug or for a traffic offense committed while under the influence of alcohol.

In addition, the court may order the forfeiture of the vehicle if the perpetrator caused a disaster, its immediate danger or an accident, and the blood alcohol concentration exceeded 0.5 per mille but was not higher than 1 per mille.

The Provincial Police Headquarters in Radom also published its statistics. They concern the Masovian garrison, i.e. the remaining counties of Masovia that are not part of the KSP.

Last year on the roads of the Masovian garrison 200 people diedfour fewer than in 2023. Among them, there were 55 pedestrians, which is a slight increase in the number of fatalities compared to the previous year. It happened to 1736 road accidents (1742 in 2023), in which 2053 people were injured.

Masovian police officers carried out over a million tests of drivers for alcohol content in the body. “It's o 12.25 percent more than in 2023. Thanks to the actions of police officers, it was revealed 1,424 drunk driverswhich, compared to 2023, is a decrease of 1.76 percent,” the police say.

The number of accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol has decreased. “In 2024 it happened 181 such events in which they died 42 people. This is a decrease in the number of incidents by 21 percent and the number of victims by more than one percent. With regard to the total number of accidents caused by drivers, drivers under the influence of alcohol accounted for 10.4 percent,” we read in the release.

1424 drivers were stopped for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h in built-up areas. This is a slight decrease compared to the previous year.

In 2024, the police arrested him in Mazovia 1230 people who violated a court driving ban, 405 persons who do not comply with the decision of the competent authority to withdraw driving privileges and 17 drivers who drove a vehicle despite an active three-month period of suspension of their driving license for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h in a built-up area, and one driver during the period of driving license suspension extended to six months.

“The sum of these crimes and offenses is 1653 cases, which means that on average the police arrest people every day from 4 to 5 drivers who should not drive due to court bans or court decisions,” says the Masovian police.

In 2024, 623 officers worked in the Masovian traffic police (full-time status as of January 1, 2025), who carried out 395 012 roadside checks and exhibited 192,183 seats for road offenses such as speeding, failure to give way or using a telephone while driving, 405 044 road traffic participants.
