Men can call this phone number regarding any matter – when they have mental, financial or family problems. And they call – there is only one helpline for men in Poland, and it has already helped a thousand people in three years. Sometimes it's about important advice, and sometimes it's just about talking.

If you are experiencing emotional problems and would like advice or support, here you will find a list of organizations offering professional help. In a situation of immediate threat to life, call 997 or 112.

A phone that can help and even save your life. Created with men and their problems in mind, it has helped thousands of people so far. This number is 608 271 402.

This telephone is intended to serve those who were reluctant to use help or not at all, those from small towns who often do not have the opportunity or do not know how to ask for help. For various reasons, they do not want or are afraid to seek help from women.

This is only an appearance that women suffer from depression more often

– We wanted to create an anonymous space, intended only for them, where, in the company of another man, a psychologist, they could open up – says Dr. MichaÅ‚ Bomastyk, president of the “Institute for Prevention of Exclusions” Foundation.

It turns out that many of them – not only from small towns – really need this opening. According to official statistics, women suffer from depression more often – they use psychotherapy in greater numbers. They are also more often hospitalized due to the severity of the disease. This data doesn't tell the whole story.

Men use the services of psychologists less often and it can be suspected that they have difficulty recognizing disturbing symptoms. They often wait until the last minute to ask for help.

– They usually come brought by their parents or partners, and usually it is a significant, severe depressive episode – says prof. Piotr GaÅ‚ecki, psychiatrist, national consultant in the field of psychiatry.

– Unfortunately, the fact that they seek help less often translates into suicide statistics – notes Anna Morawska-Borowiec, psychologist, president of the “Twarze Depresji” Foundation.

For every woman who takes her own life, five men take their own life

According to police data, for every woman who takes her own life in Poland, there are as many as five men. Most suicides are committed by those under the age of forty.

A person suffering from depression needs appropriate and quick help, but first you need to know if and when you need it. Men are often hindered by stereotypes that have been taught to them from an early age.

– They are not allowed to cry, they must face and overcome every difficulty they encounter – points out Bartosz Neska, a psychologist.

– Fortunately, the times when we had to show strength and courage in front of predators or men from other tribes or other groups are long behind us – says Dr. Tomasz KozÅ‚owski, a sociologist from the PoznaÅ„ Training and Research Center.

Young people are often better at talking about feelings than adults

That's why today you can break out of these stereotypical roles slower or faster, but still. You can learn openness from younger people.

– Young people can talk about these feelings to a greater or lesser extent, regardless of whether they are girls or boys – points out Alicja Seweryn, psychologist, consultant at the helpline for children and young people. The helpline for children and young people has been operating for 16 years – the number is 116 111. Adults can find help at these telephone numbers: 22 290 44 42 – “Twarze Depresji” Foundation, 608 271 402 – Helpline for men. The most important thing is to ask for help. Contrary to stereotypes.

– I would like to wish all men to find the courage to reach for this help – sums up Sebastian Antonowicz.
