In 2024, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) recorded 25.5 million medical certificates throughout Poland regarding temporary inability to work, which translated into a total of 253.5 million days of sickness absence. ZUS data shows that there has been a clear increase in pouring.
According to the latest data of the Social Insurance Institution in 2024, to the register of medical certificates ZUS 25.5 million e -release hit – by 300,000 sickness certificates more than in 2023. These were exemptions for both own illness and the title of childcare or other family members.
When is the most exemptions?

For years, the advantage of certificates issued to women has been clearly maintained, their number is indirectly related to the absence of pregnant women. Usually, the percentage of medical certificates issued to women is over 55.5 percent. In 2022, it amounted to 55.5 percent, in 2023 – 55.7 percent, in 2024 – 55.5 percent all certificates.

The most common reasons for dismissals
The most common causes of incapacity for work remain unchanged for several years regardless of the region of the country. These include: musculoskeletal and connective tissue diseases (41.8 million days of disease absence), respiratory diseases (33 million days), injuries, poisoning and other specific effects of external factors (32.5 million days), pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (31.8 million days), mental disorders and behavioral disorders (30.3 million) with Covid-19 (1.7 million days).
