Note TVN in Wrocław. Patient with diphtheria: I woke up with a tightness in my throat, as if someone was holding my neck

There are two patients with confirmed diphtheria in the hospital in Wrocław. The patient “zero” is a six -year -old boywho returned with his parents from Zanzibar. Doctors from the Provincial Specialist Hospital Gromkowski in Wrocław on Monday reported that the child's condition was severe but stable. The second patient is a “contact person”. Reporters of the program “Attention!” TVN managed to talk to the infected. Mr. Adam told them about the first symptoms.

– I woke up with a tightness in my throat, as if someone was holding my neck – recalls Mr. Adam.

How did he get sick with diphtheria? Before infection, the man was hospitalized with his son. – The child had a wheezing, and the doctor posted that we would go to the hospital as soon as possible. The son was admitted to the ward very quickly. And I, as a guardian, stayed with him in the ward – says the man.

– On the second day in the hospital, where I was with my son, a boy appeared with breathing problems. On Wednesday we left the hospital. At the son, all the symptoms subsided, everything has improved. And on Friday I woke up with a tightness in my throat, as if someone was holding my neck – says the man.

– There was a fever, muscle pain, actually everything. This began to do more serious – admits Mr. Adam.

The man was hospitalized. It's been there since Monday. – I was hoping that I would not stay in the ward, but I would get an injection and release me home. But it ended a little differently – says Mr. Adam.

It is known that the man is isolated from other patients. – The room is secured with a mucus, the staff set up disposable uniforms. After leaving, they change in the sluice so as not to take these said contaminated clothes outside. I have a ban on leaving the room – says Mr. Adam.

From the reporter of the interlocutor of the program “Note!” TVN shows that his son and wife feel good. – They didn't have and have no symptoms of the disease. Due to the fact that this vaccination for pregnant women is a membrane vaccine, it probably saved my wife from more serious consequences. And my child was vaccinated according to the calendar – he emphasizes.

The man is aware that if he were not vaccinated himself, it could end much worse. – That's what the doctors said. It could end worse and we couldn't talk now – he says.

Mr. Adam feels better every day. – Today there was research, it was found that something is still going on in the throat, but the well -being is getting better – he is happy.

Reporter “Notes!” TVN Agnieszka Madejska also talked to the mother of a boy sick on the diphtheria. The woman did not agree to the statement in front of the camera. She said that she did not want publicity, that there was no need to prove anything.

The woman claims that she and her husband are not anti -vaccine and it is not true that their children were not vaccinated at all. He assures that they took vaccines for some diseases and according to a non -standard vaccination calendar. This was to be done for health reasons and with relevant medical recommendations.

The boy's mother also emphasized that she wants to focus on so that her son could return home from the hospital as soon as possible. And that she could give him her positive energy.

The boy who fell ill onto the diphtheria was with his parents in Zanzibar. They traveled by three planes. However, it turns out that diphtheria vaccinations are common in Zanzibar, which “attention!” TVN was told by a Polish woman living there.

– In Tanzania, diphtheria inscribed on the list of compulsory vaccinations, these vaccinations are available in virtually every facility – says Dana Dalkowska, who lives in Zanzibar for seven years.

– If they are not available for a given moment, then journeys appear through the villages, when people with a megaphone van are informed about the date when you can come and vaccinate a child for free – says our interlocutor. – Such a wave of anti -vaccine on Zanzibar has not yet arrived, so the children are definitely vaccinated. A vaccination calendar is carried out at school, whether everything is done according to it, whether there are gaps or a child need to be vaccinated.

– Vaccines are fully refunded by the government, even those for which you additionally pay in Poland. I have a one -year -old child myself and I renewed my vaccination knowledge. Earlier I did not hear about the case of the diphtheria in Zanzibar. I do not want to defend Zanzibar fiercely, because everything is possible, this is a only developing country, while children are vaccinated – assures Dana Dalkowska.

The diphtheria is transmitted mainly by droplet. Although the disease process can attack different parts of the body, most often affects the respiratory tract. Then the first symptoms of the disease may be non -specific, including fever, sore throat, weakness, loss of appetite or enlargement of lymph nodes.

After a few days, however, characteristic changes begin to appear in the patient's respiratory tract. – They are called the alleged membranes and can arise in different places, in the nose, throat, larynx, trachea or even bronchi- pointed out, MD, Agnieszka Matkowska-Cocjan, a specialist in infectious and pediatric diseases with 20 years of experience. She compares the structure of membranes to “pieces of hard material”. “Their appearance leads to unimaginable shortness of breath,” she added.

– We are talking about foreign bodies in the respiratory system. Their presence is dangerous. Fragments of membranes can break away and completely block the respiratory tract, quickly leading to death. The more membranes, the greater the threat to the patient – says the specialist. He adds that “even if the membranes do not break away, they are a serious obstacle to breathing.” – Patients can't lie down because it's hard for them to breathe. So they sit all the time, support themselves with their hands to maintain a stable position, and so help each other in catching their breath-describes Matkowska-Kocjan.

Diphist can also lead to various types of complications. – In children, the course can be tragic with a high, up to 30 percent of mortality – said prof. Krzysztof Simon, Lower Silesian consultant in the field of infectious diseases and a specialist at the Provincial Specialist Hospital J. Gromkowski in Wrocław.

He added that the death of patients is due to “clogging of the upper respiratory tract, heart muscle classes and less often the central nervous system and kidneys.”

Diphane vaccination is mandatory in Poland. According to the vaccination calendar, each child should be vaccinated with four doses of vaccine in the early months of life (from the second to eighteenth – basic vaccination) and a dose in the age of six.

Doses resembling vaccines every 10 years are recommended due to the disappearance of immunity, over time.
