Not only medical rescuers, but also nurses are increasingly falling victim to patients and their families. Almost 80 percent of nurses and midwives talk about attacks on each other – they appeal to the authorities for systemic help.
Brugged hands, back, broken teeth. Attacks usually occur where there are no cameras. Nurses are the goal.
– Spans, various types of bruises, by all means, I have been kicked, for example, in the chest by the patient – says Monika Turek, nurse of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in Warsaw.
The peace with which Monika Turek talks about such experiences could surprise some. However, for her, violence from those who she wants to help herself ceased to be something extraordinary. – Today the patient personally spat on me – he says.
Recent studies of the nurses and midwives' trade union show that almost 80 percent of them experienced aggression in the workplace. Almost all of them witnessed her.

– A large part of the team had head injuries, brain shock, evasted ears, well, these are situations that are extremely dangerous – alerts Jolanta Januszczak, a nurse from the National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives.
– Many people develop post -traumatic stress disorder after such a situation – notes Anna Woda, a nurse from the Polish Medicine Foundation.
These situations are caused not only by patients, but also their families. Who do nurses and midwives experience aggression from?

– An increase in aggression, not only in relation to nurses, but also paramedics or doctors, this is a big problem – admits Jakub Gołąb, spokesman for the Ministry of Health.
Changes in the system are needed
A problem that the law is to predict. After the January murder of a paramedic in Siedlce, changes are announced to protect this group. Nurses are also demanding solutions here and now.
After last year's severe beating of a nurse in Starachowice, the hospital organized self -defense lessons for employees. However, the attack cannot always be stopped. In February in Katowice, the patient beat the paramedic so severely that he broke his hand.
Most often, there is simply no aggression. In Legnica at the end of February, the patient beat nine people, including five nurses.
– Part of the staff is still on dismissal. This is no longer due to physical injuries, but more because of a mental injury – indicates Nikolaj Lambinow, head of the Hospital Emergency Department of the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Legnica.
The average age of nurses in Poland is growing and according to forecasts will grow. To encourage this profession of young people, changes are needed. And in the system and in patients.
– We must have a huge understanding for patients, but at the same time patients must remember that we are there for them – says Anna Woda.
Attack can be the result of illness or stress, but nothing should justify it. – The worst thing is that we are probably going to the agenda slowly, and it should not be like that – says Monika Turek. .
