After in 2023 Oscar in the Best Film category won “Everything at once”, the psychological thriller “Tar” Todd Field began to be included in the small group of outstanding titles, which the Academy Award in this most important category did not hit. One of the issues that Field successfully smuggled in it was a reflection on the essence of art – the director reached, among others, to Leonard Bernstein's theoretical concepts. Bernstein wrote in the book “Findings”:
A work of art does not answer questions, provokes it; And its essence is the tension that arises between extremely opposite answers.

The latest work of Jacques Audiard “Emilia Perez” and the atmosphere of numerous controversy that has accompanied the film for several months, on many levels “Tar”, and the thoughts of Bernstein. In “Emilia Perez” (from Friday, February 28 in Polish cinemas), the audiaard perfectly mixes a gangster film, a psychological thriller, a Latin soap opera and a musical, while smuggling in it at the same time opera and theatrical elements. He also constructed the narrative layer in such a way that the film can be interpreted in various ways without giving simple answers. For some it is a film about an attempt to redeem the sins of the past, for others – a parable of human nature. Each interpretation seems reasonable.
The Audiard's film can provide many questions in itself. Along with the growing popularity of the film and its star, they gave birth to further controversy. These, in turn, raise questions about the role of art, artistic freedom and what film rewards should be. Questions that do not have simple, unambiguous answers.
