The first Oscar for Brazil
In the category of the Best International Film Oscar, he received the film by Walter Salles “I'm Still here”. This is the first Oscar for Brazil. The political biographical drama “I'm Still here” was based on the book by Marcelo Rubens Paivy, son of Eunice and Rubens Paivy, about which there is a film.
It is 1971, and Brazil is ruled by a military junta. The regime forces kidnap, torture and finally murder one of the former federal parliamentarians – Rubens Paiva, who publicly opposed the regime. His wife Eunice begins to publicly admonish her husband whose fate did not know. Instead, she was arrested for 12 days, where she was tortured. Her character in Salles's film was created by the outstanding Fernanda Torres, who was the second Brazilian in history (the first was her mother Fernanda Montenegro) received a nomination for the best actress in the lead role.

Eunice Paiva – after losing her husband – devoted her life in the fight for justice for the victims of the regime. At the age of 47, she graduated from law, and in the following decades she became one of the most important people involved in human rights In Brazil, she was also involved in defending human rights of the Brazilian indigenous people.
“I'm Still here” was created with a budget estimated at $ 1.5 million. Earlier, only two other films with a budget, not exceeding $ 1.5 million, were nominated in this most important category and eventually won awards. It was “Rocky” (budget – about a million dollars, winner from 1977) and “Moonlight” (budget – about $ 1.5 million, winner from 2017). “I'm Still Here” is the first film in Portuguese and the first, produced entirely in any of the countries of South America, nominated in the Best Film category
