High waves hit Peru. On Friday, more than a hundred fishermen were trapped at sea near the northern coast of the country, and some ports were closed. According to forecasts, dangerous weather in this region may last until Wednesday.

On Friday, high waves hit the northern and central coasts of Peru. The phenomenon was unusual for this region – the rough water quickly damaged and sank fishing boats. Footage of waves carrying away individuals and flooding the streets appeared on social media.

No sailing allowed

According to local media, unexpected high waves have been hitting the coast of the Piura region and the neighboring Tumbes region to the north since Wednesday. A ban on going to sea has been introduced in 81 Peruvian ports.

In the town of Talara, over a hundred fishermen were trapped at sea – due to high waves, they could not safely return to the port. As they told local media, unfavorable conditions prevented them from returning to the dock as of Friday morning, and port authorities have not yet implemented a rescue plan. There was no information about the injured or injured.

According to a report from the Peruvian Navy published on Friday, waves in the coastal area are expected to persist at least until Wednesday, gradually spreading to other parts of the coast.
