– Not inviting the Hungarian ambassador to the inauguration of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union is a “pathetic and childish” decision, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

– Decision of the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs (Radosław Sikorski) can be described in two words: pathetic and childish – said Szijjarto, quoted by the Hungarian portal HVG.

On Friday Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it does not expect the ambassador's participation Hungarian Istvan Ijgyarto at the opening gala of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council, which will take place on January 3. “The decision regarding the representation of the facility at another level is at the discretion of the Hungarian embassy,” the ministry added.

– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a clear signal that the Hungarian ambassador is not welcome in the theater today – said Deputy Minister for European Affairs Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka. This is related to granting asylum to Marcin Romanowski.

No invitation for Viktor Orban

The Prime Minister of Hungary was also not invited to the inauguration of the Polish Presidency of the EU Council on Friday evening at the Grand Theater-National Opera. Viktor Orbán – informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hungarian EU Minister Janos Boka also reacted to the decision of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On Facebook, he compared it with the inter-university conference of the Polish Institute for Hungarian and Polish students, in which the Hungarian side took part. “They do this and we do this,” Boka commented.

In turn, Marton Tompos, leader of the opposition Momentum party, said on social media that “in foreign policy, Polish-Hungarian friendship, which has been a pillar for decades, has been broken.”

Hungarian press about relations with Poland

Commenting on Poland's decision, the Hungarian press writes on Friday about bad relations between Budapest and Warsaw, which worsened in December when the Hungarian authorities granted asylum to former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanowski.

He is a suspect in the Justice Fund investigation. Before he was granted asylum in Hungary, the District Court in Warsaw agreed to his arrest, and later, at the request of the prosecutor's office, issued a European Arrest Warrant against him.

On January 1 this year, Poland formally took over the six-month presidency of the EU Council after Hungary.
