He reported that two men beat him and stole a purse containing PLN 22,000. There were holes in this story. When the police began to verify the information, it turned out that he had made it all up. The 22-year-old now faces up to eight years in prison.

At the end of December, the officer on duty at the District Police Headquarters in Piaseczno received a report from a 22-year-old man who reported that he had been attacked by two strange men.

– The injured party claimed that the attackers attacked him in one of the streets in the Piaseczno commune, beat him and stole a bag with money. Then they left the injured man and drove away in a Mitsubishi vehicle – reported senior officer Magdalena Gąsowska from the District Police Headquarters in Piaseczno.

The details didn't add up

Not only officers from Piaseczno, but also from neighboring units, worked on the reported attack. A forensic technician and police officers from the criminal division were sent to the scene of the incident.

– With each passing hour, more and more doubts appeared in the case. The police carefully analyzed the recordings from surveillance cameras, but unfortunately no record confirmed the presence of the two suspects or the attack itself. Also, the people questioned by the police did not notice any suspicious behavior in the area at the time when the attack allegedly took place – explained Gąsowska.

He beat himself up and buried the purse

The officers were also suspicious of the injuries suffered by the man, as their nature suggested that they could have been inflicted in a manner unusual for the situation described by the 22-year-old.

– Under the pressure of the collected evidence, the young man finally admitted that he had simply made up the whole story. To make the report credible, he inflicted injuries on himself to make them look like they were the result of a brutal attack, and buried the purse with money. The 22-year-old apparently did not expect that his false report would trigger such extensive police action, Gąsowska said.

He faces up to eight years in prison

The man was charged with reporting a crime that had not been committed, giving false testimony and misappropriating money. The prosecutor from the District Prosecutor's Office in Piaseczno decided to place the 22-year-old under police supervision. He faces up to eight years in prison.

– This story is a warning to anyone considering reporting a fictitious crime. Any false information that involves the services not only wastes valuable time and resources, but may also delay the response to the real threat. Police officers always take reports seriously, but false reports never bring anything good, on the contrary – they can harm others and lead to serious legal consequences for the person who reports them – concluded the spokeswoman of the Piaseczno police.
